The thickness design of GRC panels for curtain walls requires comprehensive consideration of multiple factors including mechanical performance, architectural expression, economy, and construction feasibility, making it a typical techno-economic optimization problem. Based on 28 years of engineering experience, Qinglong Group defines the common thickness range for curtain wall GRC panels between 12mm and 30mm, with 15mm and 20mm being the two most widely used specifications. In the Wuhan Han Show Theatre project, we adopted a differentiated thickness design ranging from 12mm to 25mm based on the load-bearing requirements and styling characteristics of different sections, which both met structural safety requirements and achieved optimal architectural expression.
Mechanical performance requirements are the primary basis for thickness selection. For conventional curtain wall panels, a 15mm thickness can usually meet basic mechanical requirements such as wind pressure resistance and seismic resistance. Qinglong's 15mm thick GRC panels achieve a bending strength of over 20MPa and an impact energy resistance exceeding 10J, capable of withstanding various loads under standard wind pressure. In coastal typhoon zones or super high-rise buildings, panel thickness should be appropriately increased to 20mm or 25mm, with stiffening ribs added inside panels when necessary to improve panel stiffness and stability.
Architectural expression needs have a significant influence on thickness selection. For buildings that need to convey a sense of mass and weight, thicker panels of 25mm or 30mm can be selected, using deep recessed joints and rugged surface treatments to enhance the sense of volume. In modern buildings pursuing a light, slim effect, thin panels of 12mm or 15mm better embody refined details. In the “Dongguan Grass Weaving” facade of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, we used 15mm thick panels, achieving a delicate textile-like texture through precise mold craftsmanship.
The relationship between panel dimensions and thickness requires scientific handling. Generally speaking, the larger the panel, the greater the required thickness. Through extensive experiments and calculations, Qinglong has established the correspondence between panel size and thickness: panels up to 1.2 meters in length can adopt 15mm thickness; 20mm thickness is recommended for 1.2–2.4 meters; and large panels exceeding 2.4 meters require designs of 25mm or thicker. Considering panel shape factors as well, shaped panels require greater thickness than rectangular panels to ensure stiffness.
Qinglong Group recommends conducting a comprehensive techno-economic comparison when selecting GRC panel thickness, considering not only material costs but also evaluating the impact of different thicknesses on transportation, installation, and maintenance. Through scientific thickness design and optimization, GRC curtain walls can achieve optimal architectural expression and economy while ensuring safety, creating lasting value for buildings.
