Operation and maintenance of double-curved GRC curtain walls face more technical challenges than conventional curtain walls, with the main difficulties concentrated in four areas: maintenance accessibility, damage assessment, repair techniques, and inspection technology. Based on operation and maintenance experience from large double-curved curtain wall projects such as the Wuhan Han Show Theater and the Nanning New Media Center, Qinglong Group has developed a set of targeted solutions. In particular, for the "Flowing Cloud" double-curved curtain wall of the Nanning New Media Center, pre-installed maintenance access routes and an intelligent monitoring system optimized maintenance operations that traditionally required full scaffolding into localized gondola operations, greatly reducing maintenance costs and time.
Maintenance accessibility is the primary difficulty for double-curved GRC curtain walls. Complex curved surfaces often mean that special maintenance equipment and methods are required. Qinglong recommends considering maintenance needs at the design stage by incorporating concealed maintenance access routes and lifting points. In the Hainan Poly Peninsula No. 1 project, we pre-planned maintenance paths using BIM technology and installed maintenance openings at key nodes of the double-curved curtain wall, enabling maintenance personnel to reach areas requiring repair safely and conveniently. We also developed a specialized gondola system for double-curved surfaces, which can move along the curves and provide a stable working platform.
The accuracy of damage assessment directly affects the choice of repair solutions. Damage assessment of double-curved GRC curtain walls requires comprehensive judgment combining visual inspection, non-destructive testing, and structural calculations. Qinglong uses drones equipped with high-definition cameras for regular inspections, automatically identifying defects such as cracks and discoloration through image recognition algorithms. For critical areas, ultrasonic testing instruments are used to measure material thickness changes, and infrared thermal imaging cameras detect internal voids. These advanced inspection technologies can accurately assess the condition of double-curved GRC panels without damaging the curtain wall.
The complexity of repair techniques is another major difficulty. Repairing double-curved GRC panels requires specialized molds and processes. Qinglong has established a mold library for typical components, while for special components, repair molds are rapidly produced through 3D scanning combined with CNC machining. For repair materials, we have developed a special repair mortar matched to the performance of the original GRC material, with shrinkage rate, color, and strength highly compatible with the base material. During the repair process, a stress monitoring system monitors stress changes at repaired areas in real time to ensure repair quality.
Qinglong Group recommends establishing full life-cycle digital archives for double-curved GRC curtain walls, recording the production, installation, and maintenance information of each component. Through comparative analysis of regular inspection data, performance degradation trends of the curtain wall system can be predicted and preventive maintenance plans formulated. This data-based scientific operation and maintenance strategy can effectively extend the service life of double-curved GRC curtain walls and preserve the building's lasting artistic value.
