The performance requirements for GRC materials vary significantly across different climate zones, and ignoring these differences is the root cause of premature failure in many projects. China is vast, spanning from tropical marine climates to severe cold continental climates, with distinctly different environmental stress factors. Based on 28 years of nationwide project practice, Qinglong Group has established a "climate-adaptive design" system for GRC materials, dividing China's major climate zones into "severe cold and cold zones, hot summer and cold winter zones, hot summer and warm winter zones, mild zones, plateau regions, and special corrosive environments," and defining differentiated performance requirements and control priorities for each zone. In two landmark projects in Hainan (high temperature, high humidity, high salt fog) and Harbin (severe cold freeze-thaw), the GRC we supplied adopted completely different mix proportions and structural designs, and both achieved long-term success, which fully demonstrates the importance of adapting measures to local conditions.
In Northeast China, Northwest China, and similar regions, freeze-thaw cycles are the number one killer of GRC. In addition to a high frost resistance grade (usually no lower than F150), key priorities include: 1) Low water absorption: control water absorption below 10% through a low water-cement ratio and high-quality air-entraining agents. 2) Elastic modulus matching: the elastic moduli of the matrix and fibers must maintain good synergy at low temperatures to prevent debonding. 3) Protection against de-icing salt attack: GRC along roads and bridges must offer extremely high resistance to chloride ion penetration. In the Harbin project, Qinglong raised the number of freeze-thaw cycles to over 300 by adding silica fume and specialized anti-freeze admixtures.
In South China and the coastal areas of East China, high temperature, high humidity, typhoons, and salt fog are the main threats. GRC must feature: 1) Excellent impermeability: the chloride ion diffusion coefficient should be as low as possible. 2) UV and thermal aging resistance: color and strength remain stable over the long term. 3) Excellent wind uplift resistance: connection joints require dedicated verification calculations. For the roof of the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center, Qinglong adopted dual-blending technology (silica fume + slag powder) and epoxy-coated back anchors to systematically address marine environment challenges.
In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, summers are hot and rainy and winters are cold and humid, with pronounced wet-dry cycling and large annual temperature differences. GRC must offer good volume stability and resistance to wet-dry cycling. Controlling drying shrinkage, providing reasonable movement joints, and using elastic sealants are key. In projects in Wuhan, Shanghai, and other cities, Qinglong pays particular attention to controlling shrinkage deformation.
Industrial zones require consideration of acid rain corrosion, while plateau regions feature extremely intense UV radiation and huge temperature differences. These call for targeted surface protection and material modification. Qinglong is capable of providing "customized" GRC material solutions based on the climate design report of the project location, which is the cornerstone of ensuring safety and economy throughout the building's full life cycle.
