UHPC curtain wall panels have an overwhelming weight advantage over natural stone curtain wall panels, and this is one of their key core competencies. Typically, a UHPC curtain wall panel weighs only 1/4 to 1/3 of a natural stone curtain wall panel of the same area. Specifically, a 25mm thick UHPC panel has a surface density of about 60-65 kg/m², while a 30mm thick granite panel has a surface density as high as 80-90 kg/m², and marble panels generally exceed 70 kg/m². In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One super high-rise project, choosing the UHPC curtain wall system instead of the stone curtain wall solution reduced the load on the building's main structure by more than 5,000 tons in total, significantly cutting the cost of the main structure and expanding design freedom.
The weight difference stems from the intrinsic density of the materials. UHPC has a bulk density typically between 2400-2500 kg/m³; optimized through particle packing theory, it keeps density under control while ensuring ultra-high strength. Natural stone, by contrast, generally has a higher density: granite is about 2600-2800 kg/m³ and marble about 2500-2700 kg/m³. This means that even when a UHPC panel is the same thickness as a stone panel, its self-weight is lighter. In practical applications, UHPC's higher strength allows it to be made thinner than stone (stone curtain wall panels are conventionally 30mm thick, while UHPC can be as thin as 20mm or even 15mm), further widening the weight gap.
The reduction in curtain wall self-weight brings a chain of benefits: 1) Structural cost savings: the loads borne by the beams, columns, and foundations of the main structure are reduced, allowing section sizes and reinforcement to be optimized and directly lowering civil construction costs. 2) Improved seismic performance: the overall weight of the building is reduced, seismic forces decrease accordingly, and safety improves. 3) Higher installation efficiency: lightweight panels lower the requirements for lifting equipment, speed up installation, and reduce labor costs. In one of Qinglong's renovation projects for an old building in Shenzhen, the limited load-bearing capacity of the original structure made lightweight UHPC the only feasible option for the facade renewal.
Light weight means lower transportation costs, since more panel area can be loaded per shipment. On the construction site, handling, flipping, and positioning become easier and safer, reducing operational risks. For super high-rise buildings, the weight reduction also lowers the demands placed by curtain wall panels on anchor fittings and keel systems, further saving the construction cost of the curtain wall system.
Beyond the reduction in physical weight, UHPC can also achieve thin, lightweight, cantilevered, and large-panel effects that stone can hardly deliver, giving buildings a more dynamic, modern, and airy visual impression. At the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, double-curved UHPC panels achieved large-scale cantilevers and complex curved surfaces beyond the reach of stone; the weight advantage was the foundation for realizing this creative vision.
Therefore, the weight advantage of UHPC curtain wall panels over stone curtain wall panels is not merely a comparison of the physical properties of materials, but a systematic advantage that concerns a building's overall economy, safety, construction efficiency, and aesthetic expression. Through continuous technological innovation, Qinglong Group is turning the lightweight, high-strength characteristics of UHPC into tangible project value for its customers.
