The thickness design of UHPC curtain wall panels is a comprehensive result of balancing “structural safety, thermal performance, economic cost, installation efficiency, and visual expression.” Based on 28 years of engineering practice across more than one hundred curtain wall projects, Qinglong Group defines the thickness range of conventional UHPC curtain wall panels as between 15mm and 30mm, of which 20mm to 25mm is the most common and technically and economically optimal range. For example, in the unitized curtain wall of the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One, we adopted 22mm standard-thickness panels, while in localized areas of the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building that carry artistic sculptural forms, 18mm thin panels were used to achieve a lighter visual effect. The precise determination of panel thickness relies on scientific calculation and extensive experience.
Thickness must meet the strength, stiffness, and connection joint safety requirements under wind loads, seismic action, and self-weight. Qinglong conducts finite element analysis on every panel, verifying its flexural strength, deflection deformation (usually with deflection controlled at ≤L/250), and local bearing capacity at embedded parts. In coastal typhoon zones, 20mm panels may require closer back bolt spacing or additional stiffening ribs; in inland low wind pressure zones, 18mm panels may already be sufficient. On the roof of the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center, panel thickness in critical areas reaches 28mm to withstand a Force 12 typhoon. The panel span (i.e., the spacing between hanging points) is the most critical factor affecting thickness; larger panel dimensions inevitably require greater thickness.
For buildings with energy-saving requirements, UHPC curtain walls may serve as the outer leaf of integrated insulation and decoration panels. In such cases, the thickness must meet the overall construction requirements of the insulation system. UHPC itself has a relatively high thermal conductivity, but as an outer leaf, its thickness has little effect on the overall performance of the insulation system, and 20mm is usually sufficient. For buildings with special acoustic requirements, sound insulation can be regulated by adjusting the thickness and internal construction.
From a production perspective, thin panels below 15mm impose extremely demanding requirements on raw material homogeneity, mold flatness, and process control, resulting in low yield rates and costs that actually rise. Thick panels above 25mm increase material consumption, weight, and curing energy consumption, making them uneconomical. 20–25mm is the range where the production line is easiest to control, quality is most stable, and overall cost is optimal. In addition, thickness also affects the visual sense of “solidity,” and designers will propose thickness recommendations according to the stylistic expression needs of the building facade.
Panel thickness must match the selected connection system (e.g., back bolt specifications and hanger dimensions). Standard back bolts typically require a minimum panel thickness of no less than 15mm (due to anchorage depth requirements). Panel thickness also affects the self-weight of the panel, which in turn influences the supporting keel design and lifting plan. Qinglong possesses a complete set of connection technology solutions for panels of different thicknesses from 15mm to 40mm, and can customize the most reasonable thickness for each project.
Therefore, UHPC curtain wall panels have no fixed “standard thickness”; rather, thickness involves precise optimization within a reasonable range based on each specific project. Qinglong Group's technical services begin precisely with this refined design, ensuring that every millimeter of material is put to its best use.
