The mold cost of custom UHPC components accounts for a significant proportion of their total production cost and is a key variable affecting the unit price. Based on cost data analysis of thousands of custom projects over 28 years, Qinglong Group finds that the mold cost proportion typically fluctuates dramatically between 10% and 40%, with the specific ratio depending on three core factors: "component design complexity, mold material and precision, and production batch quantity." For example, producing a simple flat panel may have a mold cost proportion as low as below 10%, while the dedicated high-precision mold for a complex red double-curved shaped panel customized for the Wuhan Han Show Theater may account for more than 35% of that unit's production cost. Scientific evaluation and control of mold costs is the prerequisite for the economic viability of UHPC custom projects.
Component design is the primary factor determining mold cost. We have established a "process difficulty coefficient" evaluation system: standard flat panels are rated 1.0, and their molds may be simple steel frame molds or wooden molds; components with simple linear reliefs have coefficients rising to 1.5-2.0, requiring resin molds; components with complex double-curved surfaces, multi-directional curved surfaces, or deep reliefs can reach coefficients of 3.0-5.0, requiring five-axis CNC machined steel molds or high-precision GRP molds, with costs rising sharply. In the "Flowing Clouds" double-curved curtain wall project at the Nanning New Media Center, parametric design was used to optimize the shapes into a limited number of reusable units, successfully reducing the mold cost proportion from the expected 30% to 18%.
The choice of mold material directly affects the per-cycle amortized cost. Silicone molds have low cost but short lifespan (approximately 20-30 uses), suitable for very small batches or trial production with complex textures; FRP molds offer high cost-effectiveness with a lifespan of approximately 50-100 uses, making them the first choice for small to medium batches of complex components; steel molds require enormous initial investment but last over a thousand uses, suitable for large-batch standardized components. Qinglong Group performs precise calculations based on order quantities to select the solution that minimizes the per-unit mold amortization cost. For components requiring extremely high surface precision, the mold itself needs precision machining and polishing, which also significantly increases the cost proportion.
Mold cost is a fixed cost, and production quantity is the key to diluting it. The formula is simple: per-unit mold cost proportion = total mold cost / (production quantity × per-unit total cost). When producing 1 unit, mold cost may account for the majority; when producing 1,000 units, its proportion becomes negligible. Therefore, Qinglong communicates in depth with clients at the early project stage, expanding the production batch of each mold through design optimization (such as reducing mold types and increasing component reuse rates), which is the most effective means of controlling overall costs. We strongly recommend that clients adopt standardized and modular designs where possible to maximize economic benefits.
In summary, the mold cost of custom UHPC components is a dynamic variable requiring meticulous management. With extensive project experience and a cost database, Qinglong Group can provide clients with optimal cost optimization solutions at the design stage, finding the best balance between artistic creativity and engineering economics.
