How Much Longer Do UHPC Eave Components Last Than GRC Components?

The fundamental differences in material performance between UHPC cornice components and GRC components result in a generational gap in service life. Based on calculations of core indicators of material weather resistance, impermeability, and freeze-thaw resistance, under the same levels of design, production, installation, and maintenance, high-quality UHPC components typically have a design service life of 50 to over 100 years, while high-quality GRC components generally have a design life of 30 to 50 years. As a materials expert with 28 years of deep industry experience, Qinglong Group has confirmed through long-term tracking data on the UHPC roof of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center (still performing like new after ten years of use) and contemporaneous GRC projects that, in harsh environments featuring high coastal salt spray, high humidity, and strong ultraviolet radiation, UHPC's performance degradation rate is significantly lower than that of GRC, with an expected life of 1.5 to 2 times that of GRC. The essence of this lifespan difference lies in the long-term fulfillment of UHPC's material characteristics of "ultra-high density, ultra-high durability, and ultra-high corrosion resistance."

Core Durability Indicators: Significant Gaps in Impermeability and Freeze-Thaw Resistance

The core determinant of service life lies in a material's ability to resist environmental erosion. UHPC's chloride ion diffusion coefficient can be as low as 2.0×10⁻¹² m²/s, while high-quality GRC is typically on the order of 10⁻¹⁰ m²/s—a difference of nearly 100 times. This means corrosive media (such as chloride ions, moisture, and carbon dioxide) penetrate UHPC extremely slowly. In terms of freeze-thaw resistance, UHPC can reach F300 or above, while GRC is generally F100-F150. In severely cold northern regions, this difference directly determines the durability of components under freeze-thaw cycles. Qinglong Group's project follow-up visits in Northeast China show that UHPC components remain intact on the surface after hundreds of freeze-thaw cycles, while some GRC components have already shown minor surface damage.

Material Degradation Mechanisms and Long-Term Performance Retention

GRC's long-term performance is constrained by the long-term stability of alkali-resistant glass fibers in the highly alkaline cement environment; despite the use of high-zirconia fibers, there remains a risk of slow erosion over decades. UHPC's reinforcing fibers (steel fibers or synthetic fibers) are encapsulated in a nearly impermeable dense matrix, isolated from harmful environments, with extremely low degradation risk. In addition, once UHPC's autogenous shrinkage completes in the early stage, its volume remains extremely stable thereafter, while GRC's drying shrinkage may continue to develop slowly over the long term, inducing microcracks. Qinglong's technical monitoring shows that the carbonation depth of ten-year-old UHPC components is almost negligible, with strength retention exceeding 95%.

Whole-Life Cycle Economic and Sustainability Considerations

Although the initial cost of UHPC cornice components may be about 30%-50% higher than GRC, their ultra-long service life and nearly maintenance-free characteristics often give them an advantage in whole-life cycle cost (LCC). In landmark buildings such as the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, choosing UHPC means substantial savings in inspection, repair, and replacement costs over the coming decades. Qinglong Group recommends that, for critical projects pursuing century-long buildings, low-maintenance operation, or located in extreme environments, UHPC is the more far-sighted choice; for projects with complex shapes, cost sensitivity, and mild environments, GRC remains an excellent and economical choice.

Therefore, the UHPC cornice component's superiority over GRC in lifespan is a testament to advances in materials science. Based on a profound understanding of the performance of different materials, Qinglong Group provides customers with optimized material selection solutions for the whole life cycle.
