Storage management of UHPC components in low-temperature environments requires special attention to four major risk points: "frost damage prevention, moisture protection, contamination prevention, and deformation prevention." Based on years of experience, Qinglong Group has developed a complete low-temperature storage solution: when the ambient temperature falls below 5°C, thermal insulation covering measures must be taken; below 0°C, components must be moved into indoor warehouses or insulated sheds to ensure they are not damaged by freeze-thaw cycles. In a winter construction project in Northeast China, we successfully stored 5,000 square meters of UHPC components safely for three months at -15°C using a three-layer protection system of "plastic film + thermal insulation quilt + striped tarpaulin," with no frost damage incidents. Scientific low-temperature storage is a critical step in ensuring the performance of UHPC components.
Although UHPC has excellent frost resistance, freeze-thaw cycles in a water-bearing state can still cause surface spalling. Qinglong strictly requires that the moisture content of cured UHPC components be reduced below 6% before leaving the factory. When storing in low-temperature regions, the component stacking area must be equipped with rain and snow shelters to prevent moisture intrusion. For components that have absorbed moisture, forced drying treatment should be carried out once the temperature rises above 5°C to ensure they safely survive the winter.
In low-temperature environments, large day-night temperature differences can easily cause condensation. Qinglong requires storage sites to be elevated at least 30cm above the surrounding ground, with drainage ditches installed, and square timber placed under components (spacing no greater than 800mm) to avoid direct contact with the ground. Meanwhile, protective film should cover component surfaces to prevent contamination from ice, snow, and dust. In an airport project in Northern China, we also used custom protective covers to achieve fully sealed protection of individual components.
Low temperatures increase the brittleness of UHPC, and improper stacking can easily lead to deformation and cracking. Qinglong stipulates that panel components should be stacked at an inclination angle no greater than 15°, with no more than 8 layers, separated by dunnage wood between layers with the wood aligned vertically. Special-shaped components require custom stacking racks to ensure even load distribution. In a project in Inner Mongolia, we designed dedicated supports for each double-curved panel, effectively preventing structural deformation at low temperatures.
Components stored for long periods at low temperatures require acclimatization treatment before installation. Qinglong requires components to be moved into an environment above 10°C 24 hours in advance for gradual warming, avoiding stress cracks caused by sudden temperature changes. Component dimensions and appearance should also be re-inspected to ensure installation quality. This complete low-temperature storage management system ensures the performance stability of UHPC components in harsh environments.
