The choice of mold material for UHPC components directly affects product precision, surface quality, and production costs, making it a critical step in the manufacturing process. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of UHPC R&D and manufacturing experience, we mainly employ four major mold systems—FRP molds, steel molds, silicone molds, and composite material molds—based on component complexity, batch quantity, and surface requirements. In the red double-curved curtain wall project for the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, to perfectly reproduce 287 unique complex curved surfaces, we used high-precision CNC-carved FRP molds to ensure millimeter-level forming accuracy; while in the mass production of standard curtain wall panels for the Shenzhen Yirui Biotech Building, we chose more durable steel molds to achieve efficient and stable production of tens of thousands of square meters of components. The selection of different mold materials reflects the optimal balance of precision, efficiency, and cost.
FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) molds are the most commonly used mold type for UHPC components, especially suitable for small to medium-batch projects with complex shapes. Their advantages lie in the ability to precisely replicate any complex textures and curved surfaces, high surface finish, short mold production cycles (typically 7-10 days), and relatively low costs. In the Shanghai Astronomy Museum art components project, Qinglong perfectly achieved the multi-layered relief effects required by the designers using FRP molds. However, FRP molds have relatively limited durability and can generally be reused 50-100 times, making them suitable for medium-sized projects producing several thousand square meters annually.
For large-scale standardized projects producing tens of thousands of square meters annually, Qinglong prioritizes steel molds. Steel molds offer extremely high durability (over 1,000 reuses) and good thermal conductivity, which benefits temperature uniformity during steam curing. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC project, we used CNC precision-machined steel molds to produce standard curtain wall panels, ensuring a high degree of dimensional consistency across more than 3,000 components. Although steel molds require a higher initial investment, unit costs are significantly reduced in mass production.
For projects requiring extremely fine textures or special surface effects, Qinglong uses special materials such as silicone molds and polyurethane molds. In the wood-grain UHPC project for the New World Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road in Shanghai, we used flexible silicone molds to precisely replicate the natural texture of wood. For oversized components (such as those longer than 6 meters), steel-wood composite molds are used to ensure rigidity while controlling mold weight.
Qinglong has established a complete mold selection and evaluation system that comprehensively considers factors such as project scale, component complexity, surface requirements, timelines, and budgets. Generally speaking, FRP molds are chosen for small-batch complex components, steel molds for large-batch standard panels, and silicone molds for special artistic effects. Through scientific mold management, we ensure that every UHPC project achieves the best results while keeping costs under control.
