Angle adjustment in the connection between double-curved GRC panels and steel structures (keel) is the core technology for achieving precise fitting of complex curved surfaces. Its essence lies in solving three major challenges: "six-degree-of-freedom spatial deviation absorption, stepless angle adjustment, and rigid locking with corrosion protection." In large double-curved projects such as the Wuhan Han Show Theatre and the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center, Qinglong Group innovatively applied a combined connection system of "spherical hinge universal joint + three-dimensionally adjustable base": the center of the spherical hinge provides ±5° universal rotation capacity to absorb angular deviations between the panel surface and the keel; the base achieves ±15mm planar position adjustment through slotted holes; and the assembly is finally locked with high-performance corrosion-resistant bolts. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One project, this system successfully absorbed cumulative angular deviations of up to 8° and positional deviations of 12mm, allowing all 287 double-curved panels to perfectly conform to the designed curved surface. Flexible connections are the "joints" of rigid materials.
Spherical hinge connectors are the ideal choice for handling spatial angular deviations. At their core is a ball rotating within a socket, allowing a certain degree of inclination in any direction (typically ±3° to ±5°). We select spherical hinges made of cast steel or stainless steel, with a wear-resistant coating applied to the surface, ensuring smooth operation without jamming during adjustment and long-term use. The connection between the spherical hinge and the GRC panel inserts uses pins or threaded rods, providing shear and tensile resistance.
After the angle is adjusted, the panel's in-plane position also needs to be precisely matched. The connection base (usually fixed to the steel structure) is designed with slotted holes in the X and Y directions; by moving the bolt within the slotted hole, the position can be precisely adjusted. Once adjustment is complete, the bolts are tightened with a torque wrench to the design values, and spring washers are added to prevent loosening.
Before actual installation, the actual position and angle data of the steel keel are captured through 3D laser scanning and compared with the BIM design model to calculate the theoretical adjustment required at each connection point. Based on this, the approximate positions of the connectors are preset in advance, greatly improving on-site installation efficiency. In the Shenzhen Yirui project, pre-assembly analysis reduced on-site adjustment time by 60%.
All metal connectors, including spherical hinges, bolts, and bases, must undergo high-level corrosion protection treatment, such as hot-dip galvanizing (thickness ≥85μm) or the use of 316 stainless steel. Insulating gaskets are placed between the contact surfaces of different metals to prevent electrochemical corrosion, ensuring the connection system lasts as long as the GRC panels.
The flexible connection technology between double-curved GRC panels and steel structures is a perfect embodiment of combining architectural industrialization with artistic individuality. Through innovative joint design, Qinglong Group enables even rigid concrete panels to gracefully adapt to every curve.
