The selection and operation of lifting equipment for installing large-sized double-curved GRC panels (typically referring to panels with a single area ≥10㎡ or weight ≥800kg) is a critical link in ensuring construction safety and precision, requiring comprehensive consideration of four core requirements: lifting capacity, positioning accuracy, stability, and flexibility & efficiency. In national-level landmark projects such as the 120,000㎡ double-curved roof of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center (largest panel 6m×2.5m, weighing 1.8 tons) and the irregular-shaped curtain wall of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, Qinglong Group has developed a complete set of heavy GRC panel hoisting solutions: the preferred choice is a crawler crane (50-100 ton class) or a large truck crane (25-50 ton class), equipped with a hydraulic system offering excellent fine-motion performance, with hoisting speed precisely controllable within 0.5m/min; lifting gear must adopt a combination of rigid spreader beams and flexible nylon slings (width ≥150mm) to evenly distribute the load; the entire process must be assisted by real-time positioning and correction with a total station. In the Nanning Wuxiang CR MixC project, we used a "crawler crane + spreader beam + laser guidance" system to control the installation error of 37 double-curved panels averaging 1.2 tons to within ±3mm. Safe hoisting is the prerequisite for artistic components to be perfectly positioned.
Equipment selection must be calculated comprehensively based on the weight of the heaviest component, the installation height, and the operating radius. The self-weight of hooks and rigging must be considered (a safety margin of approximately 15-20% of the rated lifting capacity). For super-tall (installation height >30m) or super-heavy (>2 tons) components, crawler cranes are preferred, as their stability is superior to that of truck cranes. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, we used an 80-ton crawler crane, which was still able to stably hoist 1.5-ton panels at a maximum operating radius of 20 meters.
Positioning of double-curved panels requires millimeter-level adjustments, demanding that the crane's hoisting, luffing, and slewing mechanisms have good fine-motion capability. Equipment with pilot control joysticks should be selected for more precise operation. During installation, a signalman must maintain continuous communication with the operator via walkie-talkie, assisted by surveyors providing real-time 3D coordinate feedback with a total station, to achieve "slow, steady, and precise" fine adjustments.
Rigid spreader beams (also called balanced beams) must be customized for irregular double-curved panels, with lengths exceeding the panel width, connected to the embedded inserts in the panels through multiple lifting points (usually 4-8), converting concentrated forces into uniformly distributed loads. Slings must be soft, high-strength nylon slings to avoid damaging the edges and corners of GRC panels. All lifting gear must undergo a 1.25-times safety load test before use.
Crane outriggers must be fully extended and supported on solid, level ground or dedicated crane mats. Operations must be suspended when wind force exceeds level 5 (approximately 10m/s). Detailed emergency plans should be formulated, covering procedures for equipment failure, sudden weather changes, accidental collisions, and other situations. Qinglong Group assigns dedicated safety officers to every major hoisting project to ensure foolproof operation.
The hoisting of large-sized double-curved GRC panels is a systematic project, a comprehensive reflection of equipment performance, lifting gear design, personnel skills, and meticulous management. With extensive experience in hoisting super-heavy components, Qinglong Group ensures that every artistic panel can ascend safely and precisely and be perfectly set in place.
