The "toughness" of UHPC is the key characteristic that distinguishes it from the brittle failure of ordinary concrete, referring to its ability to absorb energy and deform without suddenly fracturing. Quantitative indicators of toughness typically include "flexural strength, ultimate deflection, and fracture energy." Through optimized steel fiber reinforcement technology, Qinglong Group enables its UHPC products to achieve exceptional toughness alongside high compressive strength: flexural strength can reach 15-25 MPa, a pronounced load-deflection hardening plateau appears in four-point bending tests, and fracture energy is 5-10 times that of ordinary fiber-reinforced concrete. In the large openwork suspended ceiling project for the Shenzhen Yirui Biotech Building, high-toughness UHPC components successfully withstood potential impacts during construction and use, ensuring safety. Toughness gives UHPC, beyond sheer strength, the wisdom of "overcoming rigidity with flexibility."
Toughness primarily comes from the bridging action of fibers. Qinglong UHPC uses copper-plated steel fibers whose diameter, length, and aspect ratio are carefully designed to achieve optimal anchoring and distribution density within the matrix. Through robotic spraying technology, we achieve a uniform three-dimensional random fiber distribution, forming an efficient spatial load-transfer network. When microcracks appear, the fibers effectively restrain their propagation, allowing the material to undergo significant deformation and absorb substantial energy before failure.
The interfacial bond strength between fibers and the cement matrix is critical. We optimize the structure of the interfacial transition zone by adding ultra-fine materials such as silica fume, and use specialized fiber surface treatment agents to enhance the chemical bonding and mechanical interlocking between fibers and the matrix. This ensures that, under loading, fibers undergo full pull-out rather than slipping free, thereby delivering their maximum toughening effect.
For applications with extremely high toughness requirements, we adopt "multi-scale hybrid fiber" technology. For example, long fibers (for macroscopic toughening) are mixed in proportion with short fibers (for restraining microcracks), or steel fibers are blended with synthetic fibers (such as PVA fibers), working together across nano, micro, and millimeter scales to achieve a synergistic improvement in toughness.
We quantify product toughness through standard bending tests and drop-ball impact tests. In engineering, high toughness means components are less likely to shatter under accidental impacts (such as equipment handling or hail) and can dissipate energy through deformation under dynamic loads (such as earthquakes or wind vibration), providing greater safety redundancy. It allows designers to adopt lightweight forms such as thin walls, long spans, and openwork patterns with greater confidence, expanding the boundaries of architectural aesthetics.
Therefore, evaluating the toughness of UHPC should not rely on impressions alone; attention should be paid to its flexural performance test curves and fracture energy data. Qinglong Group is committed to developing UHPC that is "strong and tough," allowing building materials to exhibit elegant mechanical performance while ensuring safety.
