Load-bearing calculation is the key to ensuring the long-term safety of suspended GRC installations, requiring systematic consideration of multiple factors such as "component self-weight, dynamic loads, connection point forces, and seismic actions," with the core objective of achieving "precise load transfer, uniform stress distribution, and ample safety redundancy." In projects such as the large cantilevered GRC canopy for the Yirui Biotechnology Building in Shenzhen and the sky corridor at MixC One in Wuxiang, Nanning, Qinglong Group has established a complete suspended system calculation framework: static and dynamic analyses are performed with finite element software, ensuring that under 1.5 times the design load the maximum stress does not exceed 1/3 of the material's tensile strength, with deflection ≤ span/250; a safety factor of ≥4 is applied to individual connection points, verified through full-scale failure tests. In the calculation of a 12-meter-long suspended artistic grille in a hotel lobby in Hainan, we optimized the hanging point layout to keep the maximum tensile stress below 8MPa, far below the ultimate strength of UHPC. Safety is the cornerstone of suspended art.
Accurate calculation of all possible acting loads is the prerequisite. Dead loads include the self-weight of GRC components and the weight of the connection system; live loads must account for possible maintenance loads (typically 0.5kN/㎡), wind loads (calculated based on the local basic wind pressure and shape coefficients), snow loads (in cold regions), and seismic actions (calculated per seismic codes). Loads must be combined in the most unfavorable combinations as specified by the codes, serving as the basis for calculation.
The weak points of a suspended system often lie in the connection nodes. Embedded parts (such as anchor plates and bolts) must be verified for tension and shear resistance, ensuring that their anchorage depth and concrete cone failure resistance meet requirements. Connection hangers are checked for tension, shear, and bending. We adopt dynamic amplification factors to account for dynamic effects such as hoisting and wind-induced vibration. All metal connectors require anti-corrosion design to ensure a service life matching that of the building.
Under load, flexural tensile stress develops within the GRC panel, which must be kept below the design value of the material's flexural strength (allowing for strength reduction under long-term loads). At the same time, panel deflection must be controlled to prevent excessive deformation from affecting functionality and aesthetics. For large-span suspended panels, the vibration frequency must also be verified to avoid resonance with human activity or wind loads.
For suspended installations with complex shapes or stress states, refined analysis using finite element software is essential to simulate stress distribution and deformation. We use ANSYS or Abaqus software to build integral models that include the GRC panels, stiffening ribs, embedded parts, and connectors. At the same time, full-scale or scaled tests are conducted on key connection nodes to verify the accuracy of the calculation model and provide a reliable basis for the design.
The calculation of suspended GRC installations requires combining the rigor of the structural engineer with the sensibility of the artist. With its powerful calculation and analysis capabilities and rich project experience, Qinglong Group provides solid technical support for every cantilevered dream.
