Controlling curvature errors in GRC shapes is the technical key to faithfully realizing design intent and ensuring smooth transitions between components; the allowable deviation must be determined comprehensively based on 'shaping function, curvature magnitude, and visual prominence'. Drawing on 28 years of experience with complex curved-surface projects, Qinglong Group defines its internal control standards for GRC curvature as follows: for single-curved shapes, the curvature error (deviation between the actual and theoretical profiles) is ≤±3mm; for double-curved or complex free-form surfaces, the error is ≤±5mm; in visually focal areas (such as entrances and cornices), the standard is raised to ≤±2mm. In the 'Red Lantern' shape of the Wuhan Hanxiu Theatre, through high-precision five-axis CNC molds and 3D scanning inspection, we kept the curvature errors of nearly ten thousand double-curved panels stable within ±4mm, perfectly reproducing Zaha Hadid Architects' concept of flowing space. Curvature is the rhythm of architecture, and error control is what guarantees its harmony.
Setting curvature error standards requires consideration of multiple factors. For decorative components, tolerances can be appropriately relaxed; for components with structural functions or those requiring precise alignment with other materials, strict control is essential. We manage errors through an 'A, B, C' three-tier classification: Class A (critical visual areas) error ≤±2mm, Class B (large surface areas) ≤±4mm, Class C (secondary or concealed areas) ≤±6mm. This tiered management achieves the optimal balance between quality and cost.
Mold precision directly determines the curvature of components. For single-curved shapes, we use three-axis CNC-machined resin molds with surface precision up to ±0.5mm; for double-curved shapes, five-axis CNC-machined steel molds are mandatory, with a precision requirement of ±1mm. After mold fabrication, full-size inspection with a coordinate measuring machine is required before the mold can be put into production. The five-axis machining centers at Qinglong Group's Nanning production base achieve a repeatable positioning accuracy of ±0.01mm.
GRC material undergoes slight shrinkage deformation during casting and curing. Based on extensive test data, we have established deformation prediction models for different mix proportions and curing regimes, and apply 'counter-deformation' pre-compensation at the mold design stage. For example, for a 6-meter-long component, the mold is pre-cambered by 0.5-1mm to offset curvature changes caused by shrinkage. During production, slurry consistency, vibration time, and curing temperature and humidity are strictly monitored to ensure batch stability.
After demolding, components are scanned with a 3D laser scanner to obtain actual point cloud data, which is compared with the theoretical model. For out-of-tolerance components, the causes are analyzed and fed back into mold adjustment or process optimization, forming a closed-loop quality improvement system. On the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center project, this continuous optimization reduced the curvature error of later batches by 30% compared with the initial ones.
Controlling curvature errors is a systematic project that requires refined management across the entire process—from design and molds to production and inspection. With its deep technical expertise, Qinglong Group ensures that even the most complex curved surfaces are rendered with precision.
