A cost comparison between UHPC exterior walls and natural stone exterior walls requires a whole-life cost (LCC) analysis from four dimensions: initial investment, operation and maintenance, service life, and comprehensive benefits. Based on calculations from 28 years of project data, Qinglong Group finds that the initial cost of UHPC curtain wall systems is typically 1,200–1,800 RMB/m², while premium stone curtain walls (e.g., granite) run 1,500–2,500 RMB/m², making UHPC about 15%–30% lower in initial cost. However, factoring in the structural savings (approx. 10–15%) enabled by UHPC's lightweight nature (only 1/3 the weight of stone), improved installation efficiency (30% shorter construction period), and near-maintenance-free characteristics, UHPC's total cost over a 50-year life cycle can be 25–40% lower than stone. In the comparison process for the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center (a Luban Award project), our LCC analysis showed that although choosing UHPC carried an 8% higher unit cost, its comprehensive benefits were significant, making it the owner's preferred choice. The essence of cost comparison is a long-term value decision.
Stone costs are heavily influenced by block prices and yield rates, with premium stone commanding high prices. UHPC is an industrialized product with stable pricing. For installation, UHPC panels are large and lightweight, allowing quick hoisting and low labor and machinery costs. Our statistics show that the comprehensive installation unit price of UHPC curtain walls is typically about 20% lower than stone.
Stone requires regular cleaning and protective treatment (every 5–8 years), carries a risk of detachment, and involves high repair costs. UHPC offers strong weather resistance and a long-lasting surface protective layer; maintenance mainly involves replacing joint sealants at low cost. Our estimate of 20-year maintenance costs shows UHPC at only 1/3 that of stone.
UHPC's lightweight nature allows reduced beam and column cross-sections and foundation dimensions, delivering considerable structural savings, especially in high-rise buildings and renovation projects. Factory precasting combined with on-site dry-hanging dramatically shortens the construction period, and the economic benefits of earlier occupancy are significant.
UHPC can achieve complex shapes and rich colors with realistic stone-mimicking finishes, offering design freedom far beyond stone. Its integrated insulation-and-decoration panels can also enhance building energy performance. These added values should be included in the comprehensive assessment.
When selecting curtain wall materials, take the long-term view and weigh the overall picture. Qinglong Group helps clients make the most valuable decisions through scientific cost analysis.
