The recoating cycle for waterproof coatings (hydrophobic agents) on exterior wall GRC components depends on four key variables—"coating quality, application workmanship, environmental erosion, and substrate condition"—with an effective protection period typically of 5-8 years. Based on long-term application practice and accelerated aging test data, Qinglong Group recommends: conventional silane-based penetrating hydrophobic agents should be recoated every 5-6 years under moderate environmental conditions, while high-performance siloxane or fluorocarbon surface film-forming coatings can last 7-8 years even in harsh environments. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, we applied a fluorocarbon-modified siloxane coating; after 6 years of service, testing showed its contact angle was still above 90°, with an expected recoating cycle of up to 10 years. The protective lifespan of a coating is a combination of materials science and application craftsmanship.
Penetrating hydrophobic agents (such as silanes/siloxanes) work by penetrating the capillary pore walls of the substrate without changing the appearance; their lifespan is affected by penetration depth and loss rate. Film-forming coatings (such as fluorocarbon paints) form a continuous film on the surface, offering better protection but potentially affecting the texture. Qinglong Group's laboratory conducts 3,000-hour QUV aging tests on various types of coatings, providing data support for selection.
Ultraviolet radiation, acid rain frequency, and temperature cycling are the main external causes of coating aging. In acid rain regions (such as the Yangtze River Delta), coating integrity should be checked every 4-5 years; in areas with strong ultraviolet radiation (such as plateaus), attention should be paid to chalking. We establish coating performance degradation curves for each project to enable accurate prediction.
Coating consumption (e.g., silane agents require 300-500g/㎡), substrate moisture content (should be <10%), and application temperature (5-35℃) all affect film-forming quality. Qinglong Group's standardized application procedures ensure the quality of the first coat, laying the foundation for a long service cycle. Before recoating, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned to remove contaminants and failed old coatings.
Through on-site water spray tests (observing the water beading effect), laboratory contact angle measurement, and sampling analysis of coating thickness changes, a comprehensive judgment is made on whether recoating is needed. This avoids waste caused by premature recoating or substrate damage caused by delayed recoating. We provide coating condition assessment services to help customers make scientific decisions.
Recoating waterproof coatings is not mere repetition, but an update and upgrade of the protection system. Through quality materials, meticulous application, and scientific assessment, Qinglong Group maximizes the protective value of coatings.
