Selecting the thickness of a GRC panel is a key determinant of its application performance and cost-effectiveness, requiring scientific matching based on "mechanical requirements, panel size, shape complexity, fire rating, and thermal/acoustic insulation needs." Based on extensive project practice, Qinglong Group has summarized the thickness ranges of GRC panels and their applicable scenarios as follows: ultra-thin panels (8-12mm) are suitable for interior ceilings, finish layers, and decorative trim lines in low-level areas; standard panels (15-20mm) are the mainstream choice for curtain walls, railings, and roof panels, balancing strength and economy; thickened panels (25-40mm) are used for long spans, high wind pressure, load-bearing areas, or locations with special thermal/acoustic insulation requirements; extra-thick or ribbed panels (>50mm) are used for structural components or special shapes. In the Wuhan Hanxiu Theatre project, we precisely applied a thickness series ranging from 12mm to 30mm according to the wind pressure and shapes at different areas of the facade, achieving a perfect balance between safety and cost. Thickness is the art of balancing performance and cost.
This thickness range primarily leverages GRC's high flexural strength (≥10MPa) and excellent moldability to achieve complex curved surfaces and extreme lightweight design. It is suitable for weight-sensitive double-curved ceilings in interior spaces, artistic feature walls, and decorative areas such as building ground floors that require fine textures and soft light-shadow effects. Its fire performance typically reaches Class A, making it a quality alternative to gypsum products and wood materials. However, its impact resistance is relatively weak, so it should be avoided in areas prone to collision.
This is the most widely used thickness range. 15mm panels can be used for exterior wall cladding, window surrounds, and medium-span ceilings in general buildings; 20mm panels are suitable for most curtain wall projects, offering good resistance to wind loads and thermal stress with easy installation. Qinglong Group's standard panel production lines are highly automated, delivering the best cost-performance ratio in this thickness range, making it the mainstream choice for projects.
When panel size increases (e.g., >2.5m), wind pressure is high (e.g., >2.0kPa), or higher sound insulation is required (e.g., >40dB), panel thickness must be increased or reinforcing ribs added. 25-30mm solid or ribbed panels are commonly used for high-rise building curtain walls, long-span roofs, and the facing layers of sandwich panels requiring insulation fill. They offer high stiffness, minimal deformation, and superior durability.
Thickness is not an independent variable; it must be designed in coordination with the spacing of the rear framing and the connection method. Thicker panels require stronger anchors and framing support. Qinglong Group's detailed design team uses finite element analysis to customize the optimal "thickness-reinforcement-spacing" combination for each project, avoiding under- or over-design.
Scientific thickness selection is key to the success of a GRC project. With its extensive database and computational capabilities, Qinglong Group provides customers with the most valuable thickness selection recommendations.
