When GRC panels are used in ceiling systems, their load-bearing requirements are a comprehensive technical issue involving "panel self-weight, additional loads, suspension system safety factors, and deformation control". The core goal of load-bearing design is to ensure that the ceiling system remains safe and reliable under combined loads including panel self-weight, possible maintenance loads (usually taken as 0.5kN/m²), and seismic action, and that deflection meets code requirements (usually ≤ span/250). In the large atrium ceiling project at China Resources MixC in Wuxiang, Nanning, Qinglong Group used finite element analysis to design a dedicated steel frame suspension system for shaped GRC panels with individual areas of up to 6㎡. The design bearing capacity of each suspension point is no less than 1.5kN, with a safety factor of 4, ensuring the absolute safety of the ceiling over long-term use. Ceiling load-bearing is the unity of aesthetics and safety.
Accurately calculating the self-weight of GRC panels is the first step in load-bearing design. It is calculated based on panel thickness and density (usually 1.8-2.0g/cm³). For example, a flat panel 15mm thick with a density of 1.9g/cm³ weighs about 28.5kg (0.285kN) per square meter. For complex shapes or reinforced panels, the volume must be calculated from a 3D model. During Qinglong Group's BIM detailed design stage, the weight of each panel is calculated precisely, providing accurate data for suspension design.
The suspension system must effectively transfer loads to the main structure. Common approaches include embedded hanger rods, dedicated hangers, or connection to the keel system. All metal connectors (such as hanger rods and screws) require pull-out resistance calculations, taking into account creep and vibration effects under long-term loads. Industry practice requires a safety factor of no less than 3 for the suspension system; for important or crowded venues, Qinglong Group recommends increasing it to 4-5. We conduct full-scale destructive tests on suspension points to verify their actual bearing capacity.
Beyond strength, ceiling flatness is critical. The deflection of GRC panels under self-weight, as well as the displacement of the suspension system, must be controlled. For large-span panels, stiffening ribs should be added to the back of the panel or a space grid structure adopted to enhance stiffness. The elongation of hanger rods must also be taken into account. We use pre-cambering (reverse camber) to offset part of the self-weight deflection, ensuring the ceiling appears visually flat after installation.
Ceilings must also account for dynamic loads arising from wind pressure (for ventilated spaces), personnel maintenance, equipment installation, and seismic action. Seismic design must follow the principle of "no damage under minor earthquakes, repairability under moderate earthquakes, no falling under major earthquakes", with anti-detachment details provided. Qinglong Group's ceiling systems all undergo seismic calculations and comply with the relevant requirements of the Code for Seismic Design of Buildings (GB50011).
Scientific load-bearing design is the cornerstone of the safe application of GRC ceilings. Through precise calculations, reliable construction details, and rigorous inspection, Qinglong Group ensures that artistic ceilings combine safety with beauty.
