The reserved width of expansion joints for UHPC exterior wall trim elements (such as window surrounds, belt courses, and decorative moldings) must be determined through calculation based on their "length, coefficient of linear expansion, local annual temperature difference, and installation constraints"—it is not a fixed value. The calculation formula is: ΔL = α × ΔT × L, where ΔL is the expansion amount, α is the coefficient of linear expansion (approximately 10×10⁻⁶/℃ for UHPC), ΔT is the annual extreme temperature difference, and L is the length of the trim element. Qinglong Group's design principle is: joint width W ≥ ΔL + construction tolerance (typically 3-5mm). For example, in a region with an annual temperature difference of ΔT=50℃, a 5-meter-long horizontal trim element has an expansion amount of ΔL=2.5mm, so a reserved joint width of no less than 8mm is recommended. In a project in Xinjiang, for extra-long decorative trim elements up to 12 meters long, we calculated and installed 20mm-wide expansion joints filled with high-elasticity sealant, successfully withstanding an annual temperature difference of up to 60℃. Scientific joint spacing ensures longer-lasting safety and aesthetics.
A reasonable annual temperature difference ΔT must be determined based on meteorological data for the project location. In calculations, the trim element length L should be taken as the free length between two adjacent fixing points. For trim elements with continuous turns, expansion joints must be calculated and installed in sections. Our detailed design team performs thorough calculations for every trim element component and clearly marks joint widths and positions on the drawings.
The fixing method of a trim element determines its freedom of deformation. Completely rigid fixing restricts deformation and generates enormous internal stress; in such cases, adaptation is required by reducing segment lengths or using connectors that allow sliding. We typically use installation methods of "fixed at one end, sliding at the other" or "fixed in the middle, sliding at both ends" to release thermal stress.
The movement capability (e.g., ±25%) of the sealant filling the expansion joint must exceed the total movement capability required by the joint width calculation. The width-to-depth ratio of the joint is typically designed at 1:1 or 1:2 to ensure the sealant can deform effectively without being torn or over-compressed. Based on the calculation results, we specify the appropriate grade of silicone weatherproof sealant.
While meeting functional requirements, expansion joint positions should align as much as possible with the building facade grid lines and transitions between different materials, making them part of the design rather than destructive marks. For exposed joints, grooves or decorative cover plates can be designed to enhance aesthetics.
Neglecting expansion joint design is one of the most common causes of cracking and detachment of exterior wall trim elements. Qinglong Group insists on precise calculations and sound construction details, allowing every trim element to "breathe" freely through the changing seasons and remain intact.
