In severely cold regions, the ability of UHPC exterior walls to resist freeze-thaw damage stems from a four-in-one defense system of "ultra-high density, low water absorption, high strength and toughness, and rational structural design." The essence of freeze-thaw damage is the stress generated when water intrudes into pores and expands upon freezing. Through maximum packing density theory, Qinglong UHPC reduces total porosity to below 5%, with most pores being disconnected nano-scale pores, and water absorption can be below 6%, fundamentally blocking the channels for large-scale water intrusion. In projects in severely cold regions such as the Harbin Grand Theatre and the Shenyang Culture and Art Center, our UHPC components have withstood more than 300 freeze-thaw cycles (far exceeding the F300 standard) with minimal mass and strength loss. UHPC is the ideal "armor" for meeting the challenges of severely cold climates.
Through an extremely low water-binder ratio (0.18-0.22) and the filling effect of large amounts of ultra-fine active admixtures (silica fume, mineral powder), the UHPC matrix becomes exceptionally dense, with a very low proportion of harmful pores (>50nm). Meanwhile, the incorporated high-performance water reducer and air-entraining agent (under strict control) can introduce an appropriate amount of uniform, sealed micro-bubbles, providing expansion space for freezing water and further buffering frost-heave stress. Our UHPC routinely achieves a frost resistance grade above F300.
Even with low porosity, if the surface water absorption is high, the panels will still absorb moisture during rain and snow. We apply a deep hydrophobic treatment to the surface of UHPC panels used in severely cold regions, making the surface contact angle greater than 90°, which greatly reduces water adsorption and penetration. At the same time, rational drainage details are designed to prevent water accumulation at panel joints and grooves.
The uniformly distributed steel fibers in UHPC can effectively inhibit the initiation and propagation of micro-cracks. Even when minor frost-heave stress occurs, the bridging effect of the fibers prevents it from developing into destructive cracks, demonstrating excellent resistance to freeze-thaw spalling. This is a property that ordinary concrete does not possess.
In terms of detailing, we ensure that all horizontal joints have a drainage slope to prevent snowmelt accumulation. "Cold bridge" constructions are avoided to reduce the risk of localized condensation. The connector system must accommodate material shrinkage at low temperatures to avoid restrained stress. We provide customized, complete frost-resistant solutions for projects in severely cold regions, covering everything from material formulations to joint detailing.
Therefore, choosing UHPC exterior walls in severely cold regions is by no means a simple material substitution, but rather the selection of a highly reliable system scientifically validated for freeze-thaw environments. With in-depth materials research and extensive experience in cold-region projects, Qinglong Group ensures that buildings remain strong and standing even in frozen lands.
