The thickness of GRC panels for curtain walls must be determined through rigorous four-dimensional analysis of "load calculation, deflection control, structural requirements, and economics," with a typical range of 12mm to 25mm, far thinner than traditional stone (25-50mm). Based on 28 years of project data and structural calculation experience, Qinglong Group has summarized the rules for thickness selection: non-load-bearing flat panels are typically 15-20mm thick; panels with ribs or reinforced edge frames can be reduced to 12-15mm; for large panels (area >4㎡) or areas with high wind pressure, the thickness needs to be increased to 20-25mm with additional stiffening ribs. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources Mixc project, through finite element analysis, we optimized the thickness of standard panels (1.5m×3m) to 18mm, with stiffening ribs 30mm high, achieving a weight of only 40kg/㎡ while meeting wind pressure resistance (≥3.0kPa) and deflection (≤L/250) requirements. Scientific thickness determination is about finding the optimal balance point between safety and cost.
Thickness must first meet load requirements such as wind pressure resistance, seismic resistance, and impact resistance. We use finite element software to calculate each panel type, ensuring that under the most unfavorable load combinations, the maximum stress in the panel does not exceed 80% of the design value of the material's flexural strength (typically 12-15MPa), while retaining a safety margin. In coastal typhoon areas, we usually increase the thickness by one grade.
Excessive deformation of curtain wall panels under wind pressure affects appearance, sealing, and durability. The code requires deflection ≤ span/250. For large-span panels, deflection control often becomes the determining factor for thickness. We set stiffening ribs (concealed or exposed ribs) to greatly increase the section moment of inertia, thereby controlling deformation without excessively increasing thickness.
From a production and installation perspective, panel thickness should not be less than 12mm; otherwise, panels are easily damaged during demolding, handling, and installation. Areas with embedded connectors must also ensure sufficient concrete cover thickness (≥15mm). Our production line can stably produce 12mm ultra-thin panels with a pass rate above 98%.
For every 2mm increase in thickness, material costs increase by about 10%, and weight increases accordingly. Qinglong Group optimizes panel types and rationally arranges reinforcing ribs, striving to meet all requirements at the most economical thickness. We provide customers with comparisons of different thickness options, analyzing their comprehensive cost differences.
Determining GRC panel thickness is highly technical professional work. With extensive design experience and calculation capabilities, Qinglong Group ensures that the thickness of every panel is "just right," achieving the unity of safety, aesthetics, and economy.
