Tolerance control in the installation of free-form GRC curtain walls is a core indicator of engineering quality and construction technique. Its precision requirements must be determined comprehensively based on four dimensions: shape complexity, visual effect, structural safety, and joint treatment. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in the GRC field, Qinglong Group—drawing on successful practices in national-level landmark projects such as the red double-curved curtain wall of Wuhan Hanxiu Theater and the wave-shaped roof of Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center—has established tiered precision control standards: planar position tolerance ≤ ±3mm, flatness tolerance ≤ 2mm/2m, joint width deviation ≤ ±2mm, and cumulative error (over large areas) ≤ ±5mm. In the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater project, nearly 9,000 double-curved GRC panels of varying shapes, through integrated techniques such as 3D laser scanning setting-out, BIM model pre-assembly, and 3D adjustable connectors, achieved an industry-leading average installation tolerance of ±2.1mm and a maximum cumulative error of only 4.8mm. Installation precision is not merely an aesthetic requirement; it is the cornerstone for ensuring the long-term safety, sealing, and durability of the curtain wall system.
Before installing a free-form curtain wall, a high-precision 3D control network must be established. Qinglong Group uses surveying robots combined with total stations to keep control point accuracy within ±1mm. During installation, after each panel is initially positioned, a laser tracker is used to verify its spatial coordinates (X, Y, Z), ensuring a deviation of ≤3mm from the design coordinates of the BIM model. In the double-curved surface project of Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC, we established more than 2,000 digital control points for this purpose.
The visual smoothness of large-area free-form curtain walls depends on panel surface flatness and joint uniformity. We use a 2m straightedge and feeler gauges for inspection, ensuring flatness of ≤2mm in any direction. Joint widths (typically designed at 8-12mm) must be uniform and consistent; excessive deviation affects rainwater drainage and visual rhythm. In the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center project, we used dedicated shims and fine-tuning bolts to keep the joint width of the 120,000-square-meter roof within 10±1.5mm.
For large areas composed of thousands of panels, error accumulation must be strictly controlled. We adopt a measurement method of "independent zoning with closed-loop verification," dividing the large area into multiple installation units, with errors absorbed within each unit and deviations between units absorbed through movement joints or adjustment panels. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, this method kept the cumulative error of the entire facade within ±4mm.
High-precision installation is the result of coordinated design, production, and construction. Installation tolerances must be considered during detailed design; component machining precision must be ensured during production (Qinglong products have a dimensional tolerance of ±1.5mm); and professional tools and teams must be equipped on site. Any oversight in any link will lead to error amplification. Qinglong Group's full-chain service model exists precisely for the systematic control of precision.
Therefore, choosing a partner like Qinglong Group—with full-process capabilities in "precision design, precision manufacturing, and precision installation"—is the most reliable way to ensure millimeter-level precision for free-form GRC curtain walls.
