The mold cost for custom UHPC components fluctuates considerably as a share of total cost, typically ranging between 10% and 30%, depending on four major factors: component complexity, order quantity, mold material, and number of reuses. With 28 years of experience in custom UHPC, Qinglong Group has drawn on data from complex projects such as the double-curved panels of the Wuhan Han Show Theater and the wave-shaped roof of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center to summarize these mold cost patterns: simple flat panel molds account for roughly 8-12% of cost; moderately shaped components (such as single-curved panels) account for 15-20%; and highly difficult double-curved, relief, or openwork components, which require precision five-axis CNC machining, can rise to 25-30%. In the artistic openwork UHPC curtain wall project for the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building, mold costs accounted for 28% of total cost, but by optimizing the design and reducing component types from the originally planned 120 to 65, mold expenses were successfully kept within budget. Mold cost is a core variable in custom UHPC and requires scientific management.
Mold costs are positively correlated with surface curvature and detail complexity. Simple flat molds cost about 500-800 RMB per square meter; double-curved molds require 3D carving and cost 2,000-5,000 RMB per square meter. Using parametric design for the "Dongguan Grass Weaving" facade of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, Qinglong Group optimized segmentation through algorithms, cutting the number of molds by 30% and reducing the cost share to 22%.
Mold costs are a one-time investment; the larger the production volume, the lower the per-unit share. For orders of over 10,000 units, the mold share can drop below 10%; for small batches of fewer than 100 units, it may exceed 30%. We recommend that clients increase component standardization and repetition in their designs to reduce mold costs.
Steel molds have a long lifespan (over 1,000 uses) and a large initial investment, making them suitable for large volumes; resin molds are inexpensive but short-lived (50-100 uses), suitable for small batches or prototyping complex shapes. Qinglong Group has established a mold database, retaining molds for commonly used shapes for reuse in later projects and reducing new mold-making costs.
Pre-assembly with BIM technology reduces mold modifications; modular design allows a single set of molds to produce multiple variants. In the Nanning New Media Center project, we kept the cost share at 18% through mold optimization, saving the client over one million RMB.
Mold costs are an inevitable investment in customization. Through refined design and large-scale production, Qinglong Group helps clients achieve the best value for money.
