The difference in service life between UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) cornice components and GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement) components mainly stems from the gap in intrinsic material properties. High-quality UHPC, when properly designed and maintained, can achieve a service life of 50-100 years, while GRC typically lasts 30-50 years, meaning UHPC's lifespan is extended by approximately 40%-100% compared to GRC. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in both UHPC and GRC, Qinglong Group, based on long-term tracking data from national-level landmark projects such as the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater (GRC curtain wall, stable performance after 10 years of use) and the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center (UHPC roof, carbonation depth of only 0.8mm after 10 years of use), combined with accelerated aging tests, has confirmed that UHPC, with its ultra-high density (porosity ≤5%), outstanding impermeability (chloride ion diffusion coefficient as low as 0.5×10⁻¹² m²/s), and stable alkali-resistant fibers, exhibits a performance degradation rate of only 1/2 to 1/3 that of GRC under equally harsh environments. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One project, we employed both UHPC cornices (expected life ≥70 years) and GRC decorative lines (expected life ≥40 years), achieving optimal configuration of full life-cycle costs through scientific material selection. The difference in service life is not merely a number of years, but a reflection of the generational gap in material technology.
UHPC achieves a nearly defect-free microstructure through maximum density packing theory and an extremely low water-binder ratio (0.18-0.22), resulting in an extremely slow intrusion rate of harmful media (such as water and chloride ions). The annual growth of carbonation depth in Qinglong UHPC can be controlled within 0.05mm, with a projected 100-year carbonation depth of <5mm, far below the protective cover thickness. In contrast, high-quality GRC has an annual carbonation depth growth of approximately 0.1-0.15mm, showing a significant difference under harsh environments. In Hainan's high-temperature, high-humidity, and high-salt-spray environment, our UHPC components achieved a 10-year strength retention rate of ≥95%, while GRC components reached approximately 85%.
GRC's glass fibers face long-term corrosion risks in the high-alkaline environment of cement; even with alkali-resistant fibers (ZrO₂≥16%), their 100-year strength retention rate is approximately 70%. UHPC commonly uses metallic fibers (such as steel fibers), which are free from alkali corrosion issues, and the high density of the matrix further protects the fibers. Qinglong Group reduces the pore solution alkalinity of GRC by adding silica fume (20-30%) and applies copper plating treatment to UHPC steel fibers, extending service life through dual measures.
UHPC can achieve a frost resistance rating of F300 or above, with mass loss ≤5% after 300 freeze-thaw cycles, while GRC is typically F100-F200. In severe cold northern regions, UHPC cornices show clear advantages in frost resistance with a low risk of surface spalling. Meanwhile, UHPC offers higher toughness (fracture energy ≥15kJ/m²) and strong resistance to hail and wind-blown sand impacts, reducing maintenance needs. In Qinglong Group's Shenyang Cultural Center project, the UHPC cornices have withstood 15 harsh winters without damage.
Therefore, choosing between UHPC and GRC cornices requires comprehensive consideration of project positioning, environmental conditions, and budget cycles. Qinglong Group recommends prioritizing UHPC for landmark buildings or harsh environments, as its long service life results in lower full life-cycle costs.
