The freeze-thaw resistance of GRC materials is expressed by the frost resistance grade. Premium GRC should reach F300 or above (i.e., after 300 freeze-thaw cycles, mass loss ≤5% and strength loss ≤20%). Based on project experience in the severe cold regions of northern China, Qinglong Group has raised its internal control standard to F350 and conducts rigorous testing using the “rapid freezing method” (GB/T 50082). For the Harbin Grand Theatre project, the GRC decorative components we supplied underwent 350 cycles between -30°C and 20°C, with a mass loss of only 3.2% and a relative dynamic elastic modulus retention rate of 88%, far exceeding the standard requirements. Freeze-thaw resistance is a key indicator of GRC durability in cold regions, and its performance depends on the material's compactness, air content, and fibre distribution. By optimizing the mix proportions and introducing micro-doses of air-entraining agents, Qinglong Group significantly improves frost resistance while maintaining strength, extending the application of GRC to severe cold regions.
The number after the frost resistance grade F indicates the number of freeze-thaw cycles the material can withstand; F300 means it can endure 300 cycles. Qinglong GRC achieves higher compactness by lowering the water-binder ratio (0.32-0.38) and adding silica fume (over 20%), refining the capillary pores and reducing the expansion pressure of ice formation. Meanwhile, air content is controlled at 4-6%, introducing uniform, closed micro air bubbles that provide expansion space for freezing water.
Using the rapid freezing method, specimens are cycled between -18°C±2°C and 5°C±2°C, with each cycle lasting 2-4 hours. Mass loss and relative dynamic elastic modulus are measured every 25 cycles. Qinglong Group's laboratory is equipped with fully automatic freeze-thaw test chambers that monitor changes in each specimen in real time, ensuring data accuracy.
Uniformly distributed fibres can effectively suppress the propagation of micro-cracks and prevent the accumulation of freeze-thaw damage. Through robotic spraying, we ensure that fibres are uniformly distributed in a three-dimensional random orientation, forming an effective “micro-reinforcement” network. In a post-evaluation of a project in Shenyang, core drilling tests on GRC panels after 8 years of use showed that their internal structure remained intact.
In Changchun's extreme winter low temperatures (-35°C), Qinglong GRC components have survived multiple severe winters without damage. Laboratory tests on cores taken on site show that the performance degradation of components after 5 years of freeze-thaw exposure is highly consistent with that of laboratory F300 specimens, proving that laboratory data can effectively predict actual durability.
Freeze-thaw resistance is an important reflection of GRC quality. Through rigorous testing and continuous formulation optimization, Qinglong Group has made GRC a reliable material suitable for all climate conditions across the country.
