In GRC installation, spacing control mainly includes the "joint width between panels", the "cavity distance between panels and the structural substrate", and the "layout spacing between connectors". These dimensions are not fixed values; rather, they must be comprehensively designed based on four major factors: "component dimensions, thermal performance, structural deformation, and visual effect". Based on 28 years of engineering practice and relevant national standards, Qinglong Group has summarized general guiding principles: panel joint width is typically between 8-15mm to accommodate thermal deformation and installation tolerances; the cavity distance between GRC panels and structural walls is generally no less than 40mm to ensure air circulation and condensate drainage; and connector spacing must be determined through structural calculations, usually not exceeding 600mm. In the super-large roof project of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, through precise calculation we set the joint width at 12mm, which not only ensured free expansion and contraction under large temperature differences but also created a facade texture rich in rhythm. Spacing is the "breathing channel" of the GRC curtain wall system, and its rationality directly affects the safety, durability, and aesthetics of the system.
The core function of joint width is to absorb the thermal expansion and contraction of materials caused by temperature changes. Qinglong Group's design principle is: joint width ≥ (α ΔT L) + installation tolerance + safety margin. Here, α is the linear expansion coefficient of GRC, ΔT is the local maximum annual temperature difference, and L is the panel length. For example, in areas with a temperature difference of up to 50℃, a 3-meter-long panel can theoretically expand or contract by up to 1.5mm, so the joint width usually needs to be set above 10mm. Joints that are too narrow will cause compressive stress concentration at the joints, resulting in edge cracking or deformation of the panels.
The cavity behind GRC panels is the key to building a waterproofing system based on the "rain screen principle" or "pressure-equalized cavity". This cavity provides a drainage path for the small amount of infiltrated water, while balancing internal and external air pressure to prevent moisture from penetrating further due to wind pressure differences. Qinglong Group generally recommends a cavity distance of no less than 40mm, with effective drainage holes at the bottom. For walls with insulation requirements, the cavity must also accommodate the thickness of the insulation layer.
The spacing and layout of connection points must be determined through wind load resistance calculations, ensuring that under maximum wind loads, the stress and deflection of the GRC panels themselves, as well as the load-bearing capacity of the connectors, all meet code requirements. Generally, for GRC panels of standard thickness, the spacing between fixing points should not exceed 600mm, and each panel requires at least 4 support points. For oversized or irregularly shaped panels, auxiliary fixing points or edge rib reinforcement are also required. In coastal typhoon regions, these requirements are even more stringent.
Beyond technical factors, spacing also needs to consider visual impact. By adjusting joint width, the building's panelization and sense of scale can be emphasized or de-emphasized. Sometimes the "visual equal width" principle is adopted: although panel dimensions differ in different areas, joint widths are fine-tuned so that they appear uniform in width on the facade, achieving a more orderly visual effect.
During the detailed design stage of each project, Qinglong Group uses professional software for comprehensive calculation and simulation, tailoring the most rational spacing parameters to each project to ensure that the GRC curtain wall system is both safe and durable as well as aesthetically harmonious.
