Compared with traditional materials such as concrete and natural stone, UHPC shaped components offer significant advantages in weight, typically achieving a weight reduction of 40%-70%, with the exact figure depending on component design, thickness optimization, and application scenarios. Based on extensive project data comparisons, Qinglong Group has found that: under the same strength requirements, UHPC curtain wall panels (surface density of approximately 40-60kg/m²) weigh only 1/3 to 1/2 as much as natural stone curtain walls (surface density of approximately 100-150kg/m²), and 1/4 to 1/5 as much as precast ordinary concrete cladding panels (surface density of approximately 200-300kg/m²). In the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center project, we replaced the originally designed 50mm-thick granite with 20mm-thick UHPC curtain wall panels, reducing the total weight of the building's exterior walls by approximately 800 tons, significantly lowering the load on the main structure and foundation costs, and improving overall economic benefits by more than 15%. Lightweight construction is one of UHPC's core competitive advantages.
The compressive strength of UHPC (≥120MPa) and flexural strength (≥15MPa) are far higher than those of ordinary concrete (C30, with a compressive strength of approximately 30MPa), which means that under the same load, UHPC components can have smaller cross-sections and use less material, thereby achieving weight reduction. In addition, by incorporating lightweight aggregates (such as ceramsite) or optimizing the manufacturing process (such as forming closed-cell structures), the density can be further reduced. The lightweight UHPC developed by Qinglong Group can achieve a density as low as approximately 1.8g/cm³, while maintaining a strength retention rate of over 85%.
Lightweighting is not merely a material substitution; it must also be achieved through design optimization. We use topology optimization algorithms to remove material from areas subject to lower stress while ensuring structural safety, creating hollowed-out or reinforced rib structures. In the large decorative components of the China Resources MixC One in Wuxiang, Nanning, optimized design achieved a 50% weight reduction while the stiffness of the components fully met the requirements. For long-span components, adopting thin-shell or sandwich structures can greatly improve material utilization efficiency.
Weight reduction brings a series of comprehensive benefits: lower transportation costs (more components can be loaded), reduced lifting equipment requirements (smaller-tonnage cranes can be used), improved construction efficiency (components are easier to handle and install), and greater compatibility with renovation projects of existing structures (less reinforcement required). In old building renovation projects, the lightweight properties of UHPC make it an ideal choice for replacing heavy, bulky materials. Qinglong Group's lightweighting solutions create value for clients far beyond that of the materials themselves.
