Do Connection Methods Differ for GRC Panels of Different Curvatures? Joint Design and Qinglong Group's Adaptive Connection Technology

Connection methods for GRC panels with different curvatures vary significantly and must be individually designed according to surface type, load-bearing characteristics, and deformation requirements. Based on 28 years of engineering practice, Qinglong Group has classified connection systems into three types: single-curved panels use hinged connections (allowing in-plane rotation); double-curved panels use ball-hinge connections (three-directional rotation); complex curved surfaces use universal-joint connections (six-degree-of-freedom adjustment). In the wave-shaped roof of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, three-dimensionally adjustable hangers (adjustment range ±15mm) were adopted in areas with high curvature variation rates (curvature radius R<1000mm), while simplified connections were used in gently curved areas (R>3000mm), ensuring both safety and cost savings. Scientific connection is the key to the long-term reliability of curved curtain walls.

Single-curved panel connections are relatively simple. Sliding supports are arranged along the curvature direction to allow thermal deformation, while rigid fixing is applied in the perpendicular direction. In the Nanning New Media Center project, Qinglong Group used slotted-hole hangers with a horizontal adjustment range of ±10mm, successfully absorbing deformation.

Double-curved panel connections require multi-directional adaptation. Ball-hinge connection points are used, with rotation angles ≥5°. We developed shape-memory alloy washers that automatically adjust preload with temperature changes. In the red double-curved panels of the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater, finite element analysis was used to optimize the hanger point distribution, reducing the stress concentration factor from 3.2 to 1.8.

Special joints receive dedicated treatment. At locations with abrupt curvature changes, movement joints are installed to release stress. Qinglong Group's adaptive connection system has proven safe and reliable through 10 years of service.
