The core strategy for small and medium-sized projects to reduce the mold cost of custom UHPC components lies in four areas: “design optimization, mold sharing, process substitution, and tiered manufacturing.” Qinglong Group provides economical solutions for numerous small and medium-sized cultural-creative and commercial renovation projects: First, through design optimization, complex double-curved surfaces are moderately simplified into developable single-curved surfaces or faceted surfaces while meeting aesthetic requirements, directly reducing mold costs by 50-70%. Second, through the “mold sharing platform,” existing molds with similar shapes from past projects are reused, with only modification fees to pay. Third, for shallow relief or textures, economical processes such as silicone mold transfer are used instead of CNC engraving. Finally, a tiered strategy of “high precision for key areas, simplification for non-key areas” is adopted. For example, in the renovation of a boutique hotel in Nanning, by optimizing the entrance's double-curved canopy into a single curve and using GRP molds, we kept mold costs within 15% of the total cost, allowing the project to be delivered within budget.
Cost control must begin at the design source. Qinglong Group's technical team can get involved at the concept stage, providing “buildability” optimization suggestions, for example: adjusting the positions of panel joints to minimize the number of non-standard components; unifying the dimensions of similar components to enable mold reuse; and appropriately increasing draft angles to reduce demolding difficulty and mold wear. Early collaboration with designers often delivers value far beyond the savings achieved later in production.
Even for custom projects, standardization is possible. For example, the cross-sections of decorative moldings can be unified with only the lengths varied; the pattern units of perforated panels can be standardized to create rich effects through arrangement and combination. Qinglong Group has established a standard component library and a “flexible mold” system (such as molds with adjustable curvature), enabling personalized customization within a certain range at a cost close to that of standard products.
Select molds according to production volume (number of components): for volumes under 50 units, wood-substitute molds or high-strength resin molds are preferred; for 50-200 units, GRP molds are an option; steel molds are considered only for very large volumes. For surface textures, the “master mold + sub-mold” transfer process is far more economical than directly engraving the mold. We communicate candidly with clients about the cost differences between different options to help them make the best decisions. Reducing costs does not mean compromising quality; rather, it means achieving the best value through ingenuity.
