The core mechanism by which steam curing enhances UHPC strength and density lies in temperature accelerating the hydration reaction and promoting microstructure optimization. Through 28 years of research, Qinglong Group has confirmed that steam curing (60-80°C) increases the cement hydration rate by 3-5 times, raises C-S-H gel production by 20-30%, reduces porosity from 15% to below 5%, and improves compressive strength by 20-30%. At our Nanning production base, steam curing chambers with precise temperature control (±2°C) keep the UHPC strength dispersion coefficient within 3%, with a chloride ion diffusion coefficient as low as 1.2×10⁻¹² m²/s, far exceeding ambient-cured products.
Accelerated hydration is the foundation of strength gain. Curing at 60°C for 24 hours achieves the same degree of hydration as 7 days of ambient curing, allowing early strength to reach 70% of the 28-day strength. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that steam curing makes Ca(OH)₂ crystals smaller and distributes C-S-H gel more uniformly, reducing the interfacial transition zone thickness from 20μm to 5μm. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, steam-cured UHPC curtain wall panels reached a 3-day demolding strength of 40MPa, ensuring rapid construction.
Microstructure densification is the key. Steam curing promotes continued hydration of unhydrated particles, filling capillary pores and reducing the most probable pore size from 100nm to 50nm. Mercury intrusion porosimetry tests showed that steam-cured UHPC has a total porosity of only 4.5%, compared with 8.5% for ambient-cured products. This structure doubles impermeability and significantly enhances durability. Qinglong Group's optimized steam curing curve features a heating rate of ≤15°C/h, 24h of constant temperature, and a cooling rate of ≤20°C/h, preventing thermal stress cracking.
The steam curing process must be coordinated with material design. We adjust the curing regime according to cement type and admixture type. Sulphoaluminate cement uses low-temperature steam curing (60°C), while Portland cement is suited to high temperature (80°C). Through 28 years of accumulated experience, Qinglong has developed a mature steam curing technology system that guarantees high UHPC performance.
