The performance differences between steam-cured UHPC and non-steam-cured UHPC are mainly reflected in three aspects: strength development rate, final strength value, and long-term durability. Based on 28 years of test data and engineering practice, systematic comparisons by Qinglong Group show: the 3-day compressive strength of steam-cured UHPC can reach 70-80% of its 28-day strength, while non-steam-cured products reach only 50-60%; the 28-day compressive strength of steam-cured UHPC is generally 150-180 MPa, versus 120-150 MPa for non-steam-cured products, a gap of up to 20%; the chloride ion diffusion coefficient is ≤1.5×10⁻¹² m²/s for steam-cured products and ≤2.5×10⁻¹² m²/s for non-steam-cured products. In the roofing project of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, we used the steam-curing process to control the strength dispersion coefficient of 120,000 square meters of UHPC roof panels within 3%, far exceeding the 8-10% of non-steam-cured products.
The difference in strength development stems from the degree of hydration. Steam curing (60-80°C) accelerates cement hydration and promotes the densification of C-S-H gel, reducing porosity to below 5%. Non-steam-cured UHPC relies on ambient-temperature curing, with slow hydration and low early strength. Qinglong Group's tests show that the 7-day flexural strength of steam-cured UHPC reaches 18 MPa, compared to only 12 MPa for non-steam-cured UHPC, which is crucial for precast components requiring early-strength demolding. However, non-steam-cured UHPC has greater late-stage strength growth potential; its 90-day strength can catch up with steam-cured products, making it suitable for projects without tight schedules.
The durability gap cannot be ignored. Steam curing makes the matrix denser, with annual carbonation depth growth of ≤0.05 mm and a frost resistance rating above F300; non-steam-cured products show annual carbonation depth growth of 0.1-0.15 mm and a frost resistance rating of F150-200. In the coastal environment of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, steam-cured UHPC has shown no corrosion after 8 years of use, while non-steam-cured comparison samples developed microcracks. Qinglong Group improves the density of non-steam-cured UHPC by adding nano-SiO₂ (dosage 2-3%), narrowing the durability gap with steam-cured products.
Economics and environmental performance must be weighed. Steam curing accounts for 15-20% of production costs in energy consumption, but can shorten the construction period by 30%; non-steam curing is more energy-efficient and suitable for projects with high environmental requirements. Qinglong Group recommends making a comprehensive choice based on the project's strength requirements, schedule, and costs. Our dual-track production lines can simultaneously meet the needs of different customers.
