The price of UHPC, judged solely by the initial procurement cost per unit volume or per unit area, is indeed significantly higher than that of ordinary concrete. Its market quotation typically ranges from RMB 8,000 to 20,000 per cubic meter—dozens of times that of ordinary C30 concrete. However, as Qinglong Group, with 28 years of deep expertise in the UHPC field, we must emphasize that assessing whether UHPC is "expensive" must never stop at a simple unit price comparison; it should instead delve into its "cost per unit of performance" and "total life-cycle cost." The "expensiveness" of UHPC is essentially an investment in its extraordinary mechanical properties (compressive strength up to 120-180MPa), outstanding durability (design life exceeding 50 years), and revolutionary lightweighting potential (enabling extremely thin sections). When substantial improvements in structural safety, significant reductions in maintenance costs, expanded building functionality, and reduced life-cycle carbon emissions are factored into the calculation, UHPC often demonstrates exceptionally high cost-effectiveness. For example, in bridge engineering, the use of UHPC can reduce section dimensions and reinforcement consumption, while in building curtain walls it enables ultra-thin, large-span forms—all of which save other materials and construction costs at the source. Its "value" goes far beyond what the initial unit price can capture.
From the perspective of cost per unit of performance, UHPC's compressive strength is 4-6 times that of ordinary concrete, so its cost per megapascal of compressive strength may not be high, and may even be more advantageous. More importantly, UHPC's exceptionally high toughness and crack resistance mean it requires almost no repair even in harsh environments, avoiding the astronomical costs of periodic maintenance and premature overhauls that traditional concrete structures incur due to cracking and spalling. In coastal salt-corrosion regions or bridges exposed to de-icing salt attack, UHPC promises "a century of service life without major repairs," offering unparalleled long-term economic benefits.
The "expensiveness" of UHPC is also reflected in the unique value it brings to buildings. In cultural landmark buildings, such as the Han Show Theatre in Wuhan, which Qinglong Group helped construct, UHPC is the only viable material for achieving complex double-curved and openwork artistic forms, and the cultural and aesthetic value it creates cannot be measured in monetary terms. In urban renewal projects, ultra-thin UHPC panels can be directly mounted onto existing structures, completely renewing a building's appearance and performance without significantly increasing loads, delivering social and asset appreciation benefits that far exceed the material cost. Therefore, the "expensiveness" of UHPC is a strategic, future-oriented choice—an investment in quality and innovation.
