Balancing the aesthetics and structural safety of artistic UHPC forms is a systematic engineering effort requiring close collaboration between architects and engineers, achieved through a triple technical path of "form-finding – structural optimization – material reinforcement." In projects such as the "Dongguan Grass Weaving" facade of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center and the wave-shaped roof of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, Qinglong Group combined parametric generative design with finite element analysis, maintaining visual tension while keeping the structural safety factor above 2.5, achieving a perfect fusion of art and technology.
Structural genes are embedded right from the form-finding stage. Mechanics-driven generative algorithms are employed so that the forms naturally follow the load transfer paths. In the double-curved ribbon design of the Nanning New Media Center, particle-spring system simulation was used to generate structural forms that are both beautiful and efficient, reducing stress concentration. At the same time, fabrication constraints were set—such as a minimum curvature radius ≥300mm and a demolding angle ≥3°—to ensure buildability. The Qinglong team interacted with architects in real time, avoiding "unbuildable" designs at the early concept stage and reducing later reinforcement costs at the source.
Structural optimization is the key step. Through topology optimization technology, non-critical areas are reasonably hollowed out, reducing weight without compromising strength. In the Wuhan Han Show Theater project, load analysis of the lantern-shaped form led to decorative openings placed in low-stress areas, reducing weight by 20% while enhancing the artistic effect. For weak points, such as sharp-angle junctions, load-bearing capacity is improved through local thickening, stiffening ribs, or embedded reinforcing fibers. Finite element analysis ensures that deformation under ultimate load is ≤L/250.
Material performance is the cornerstone of this balance. Qinglong UHPC achieves a flexural strength of 18–25 MPa, five times that of ordinary concrete, making thin-section design possible. Fiber-oriented distribution technology enhances toughness along the principal stress directions. Safety is ultimately verified through full-scale (1:1) load testing. This whole-process collaborative design makes artistic UHPC forms both stunning and reliable.
