UHPC facade panels are hailed as "low-maintenance" or "maintenance-free" materials, owing to their stone-like density, extremely low water absorption, and highly stain-resistant surface properties. However, this does not mean they are entirely maintenance-free. Based on long-term project tracking and material aging research, Qinglong Group recommends a scientific maintenance strategy of "relying primarily on daily rainwater self-cleaning, supplemented by regular professional inspections, with professional cleaning when necessary." In areas free from heavy pollution or special environmental conditions, the professional cleaning cycle can be as long as 8-12 years, far less frequent than the 3-5 year cleaning cycle required for traditional materials such as natural stone, ceramic tiles, and coatings.
The low-maintenance characteristics of UHPC are rooted in the nature of the material itself. First, its extremely low porosity (typically <5%) and the dense surface layer formed after surface treatment (such as fluorocarbon coatings and self-cleaning coatings) make it difficult for dust and contaminants to penetrate and adhere. Second, the protected surface exhibits excellent hydrophobicity (contact angle >110°), creating a "lotus effect" whereby rainwater washing can carry away most surface dust. Therefore, in most cases, natural rainfall is sufficient to keep its appearance clean.
However, maintenance requirements are closely related to the local environment. In dusty areas with heavy vehicle exhaust pollution, such as industrial zones and sites along major traffic arteries, or in coastal areas with high salt fog, contaminants adhere more quickly, and it is recommended to shorten the inspection and cleaning cycle to 5-8 years. In areas with severe acid rain, attention should be paid to the condition of the protective coating. Qinglong Group's maintenance recommendations are: conduct a remote or on-site visual inspection every 2-3 years; conduct a close-range professional inspection every 5 years to assess the surface contamination level, the condition of the protective coating, and the aging of sealants; and decide whether to clean or reapply the protective coating based on the inspection results.
When cleaning is required, the correct procedures must be followed: use neutral cleaners (pH 6-8), low-pressure water jets (pressure ≤50Bar), and soft tools, and avoid strong acids, strong alkalis, or hard scraping objects that may damage the surface. Regular, scientific preventive maintenance ensures that UHPC facades maintain their enduring appearance and performance throughout a service life of more than 50 years, offering significant advantages in whole-life-cycle maintenance costs.
