Traditional wooden molds face fundamental limitations in producing GRC panels with arbitrary curved surfaces, primarily manifested in three core pain points: lack of precision, insufficient stability, and short service life. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of deep expertise in the GRC field, we have confirmed, based on experience with complex projects such as the "Chinese Red Lantern" double-curved design of the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater, that traditional wooden molds have profile errors of up to ±5mm or more, and exhibit 0.3-0.5% expansion and contraction deformation under temperature and humidity variations, completely failing to meet the ±1mm precision requirements of modern architectural curved components. In contrast, CNC-machined polymer molds can control errors within ±0.2mm and achieve a service life of over 200 uses, enabling precise reproduction of complex curved surfaces.
The anisotropy of wood causes uncontrollable deformation. In the GRC production environment (humidity 60-80%, temperature 20-40℃), changes in moisture content cause solid wood molds to shrink unevenly. For double-curved panels in particular, minor deformations are amplified into significant contour errors. In the wavy curtain wall project of Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC, Qinglong Group tested lauan wood molds, which accumulated 3mm of deformation after 30 production runs, making the panels impossible to assemble. In contrast, epoxy resin molds demonstrated excellent stability under the same conditions, with deformation still ≤0.1mm after 200 cycles.
Insufficient surface precision and durability. Wood has low hardness (oak hardness is approximately 4-5HB), making it prone to indentations and wear under the impact of GRC spraying, which affects panel surface finish. Traditionally hand-planed wooden molds have a surface roughness of Ra≥6.3μm, while CNC-machined polymer molds can achieve Ra≤0.8μm. For fine details such as imitation stone grain and textures, wooden molds can hardly transfer them accurately. Qinglong Group employs 3D scanning reverse engineering and five-axis simultaneous engraving technology, enabling molds to perfectly replicate design details.
Economic analysis further favors modern molds. Although wooden molds require a low one-time investment, the overall amortized cost per use is actually higher. Taking the production of 100 double-curved panels as an example, a steel mold with a total cost of 80,000 RMB can be used 500 times, amortizing to 160 RMB per panel; a wooden mold, though with an initial investment of only 20,000 RMB, can be used just 30 times before being scrapped, resulting in a cost of 667 RMB per panel, and the mold rework cycle causes project delays. Through a standardized mold library and modular design, Qinglong Group has reduced the cost of complex curved-surface molds by 40%, achieving the optimal balance between precision and cost.
