The difference in service life between UHPC cornice components and GRC components is a core concern for owners when making product selections. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of deep expertise in the UHPC/GRC field, based on data analysis from multiple long-term tracked projects, we believe that under the same environmental conditions, high-quality UHPC cornice components have a design service life of 50-100 years, while standard GRC components typically last 30-50 years. The difference mainly stems from fundamental distinctions in material density, durability, and aging resistance. This longevity advantage gives UHPC significant value in applications at critical building locations.
Material performance is the foundation of the lifespan difference. UHPC has a compressive strength of 120-150MPa, porosity below 2%, and a chloride ion diffusion coefficient controlled below 1.5×10⁻¹²m²/s—indicators far exceeding those of GRC (compressive strength 40-60MPa, porosity 8%-12%). In the roofing project of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, Qinglong's UHPC cornice components endured 5 years of coastal high-salt-spray environment with a carbonation depth of only 0.1mm and a strength retention rate above 95%. Under the same conditions, GRC components showed a carbonation depth of 0.5mm, demonstrating UHPC's stronger resistance to environmental erosion. Accelerated aging tests predict that UHPC's service life in standard environments is 20-30 years longer than that of GRC.
Durability performance determines long-term behavior. UHPC can withstand over 300 freeze-thaw cycles with a mass loss rate ≤3%, while GRC typically endures 100-150 cycles. In the Wuhan Han Show Theatre project, Qinglong UHPC cornice components passed 3 severe winters without any signs of frost damage. In terms of impermeability, UHPC achieves an impermeability grade of P12 or above, twice that of GRC (P6-P8), effectively blocking the intrusion of moisture and corrosive media. This outstanding durability directly translates into longer maintenance intervals and lower life-cycle costs.
Maintenance requirements affect actual service life. UHPC components have dense surfaces with low dirt adhesion, allowing cleaning cycles to be extended to 3-5 years, while GRC requires cleaning every 1-2 years. Tracking data from Qinglong Group's Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project shows that UHPC cornices required only one protective coating maintenance over 8 years of use, while GRC components needed two. Lower maintenance frequency not only reduces costs but also minimizes the impact of maintenance work on building operations. Overall, UHPC cornice components offer better full-life economics than GRC, making them particularly suitable for high-end landmark buildings.
