The choice of mold material for UHPC components directly affects product precision, surface quality, and production efficiency. Qinglong Group, with 28 years of deep expertise in the UHPC field, draws on practical experience from major projects such as the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building and the Algeria Hotel. We believe that high-quality UHPC molds should prioritize three main material categories: fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP), silicone molds, and metal molds, each with its own applicable scenarios and advantages. The choice of mold material requires comprehensive consideration of component design complexity, production volume, and cost-effectiveness. Scientific selection can improve product quality by more than 20%.
FRP molds are the most commonly used mold type in UHPC production, offering low cost and fast fabrication. At its Nanning production base, Qinglong Group uses epoxy resin-based FRP molds with a service life of over 200 uses and a surface finish reaching Ra3.2μm. In the wavy roof project of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, FRP molds perfectly replicated the double-curved panel shapes, with surface profile precision controlled within ±0.5mm. These molds are particularly suitable for small and medium batch production, with a fabrication cycle of 3-5 days per mold set and costs 60% lower than metal molds. However, their temperature resistance is relatively poor; they are prone to deformation when used long-term in environments above 60℃, so steam curing temperatures must be strictly controlled.
Silicone molds are suitable for components with complex reliefs and fine textures. In the translucent UHPC project at Shanghai Century Plaza, Qinglong Group used silicone molds to replicate natural wood grain, achieving a minimum texture precision of 0.1mm. Silicone molds offer good flexibility and easy demolding, making them especially suitable for complex shapes such as hollow-outs and undercuts. However, they have a shorter service life, typically requiring replacement after 50-80 uses, and are relatively costly, making them suitable for key projects with high artistic requirements. In the "Chinese Red Lantern" design of the Wuhan Hanxiu Theatre, silicone molds ensured the precise reproduction of relief details.
Metal molds are mainly used for large-batch production of standardized components. Qinglong Group uses aluminum alloy or steel molds with a service life of over 1,000 uses. In the batch flat panel project at the Yangshengtang Pharmaceutical Hangzhou Industrial Park, metal molds shortened the production cycle by 30% and significantly improved product dimensional stability. Metal molds offer good thermal conductivity, which benefits temperature control, but require large initial investment and long fabrication cycles (7-10 days), making them suitable for standard products with an annual output above 10,000 pieces. Through scientific selection, Qinglong Group customizes the optimal mold solution for each project, ensuring maximum product quality and benefits.
