Strength degradation of GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) is a key issue affecting its long-term durability. As Qinglong Group, with 28 years of dedicated experience in the GRC field, we have identified four major factors affecting GRC strength degradation based on extensive project practice and accelerated aging tests: material mix defects, environmental effects, improper construction techniques, and lack of maintenance. Scientific analysis of these factors combined with targeted measures can significantly extend the service life of GRC.
Material mix proportion is the primary factor affecting GRC strength degradation. Improper cement type selection or imbalanced admixture ratios can lead to insufficient matrix strength. In the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center project, Qinglong Group found that GRC panels made with low-alkalinity cement and silica fume content below 20% suffered a flexural strength loss of 15% after 5 years of use. With an optimized mix (silica fume content of 25%-30%), strength loss over the same period was controlled within 5%. Unreasonable aggregate particle size distribution also accelerates degradation; aggregates with a maximum particle size exceeding 2mm tend to form stress concentration points. By controlling aggregate gradation within the 0.1-1mm range, Qinglong raised the 30-year strength retention rate of GRC to 90%.
Environmental factors are external triggers of strength degradation. Coastal high-salt-spray environments promote chloride ion penetration, neutralizing cement alkalinity and corroding glass fibers. In the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center project, Qinglong Group monitored GRC components within 500 meters of the coastline showing an annual strength degradation rate twice that of inland areas. To address this issue, we reduced the chloride ion diffusion coefficient to below 1.5×10⁻¹²m²/s by incorporating silane-based hydrophobic agents. Freeze-thaw cycles are the main threat in cold regions; in projects in Northeast China, Qinglong adopted air-entrained GRC, keeping the material's mass loss rate within 3% after 300 freeze-thaw cycles.
Construction defects can lay hidden hazards for strength degradation. Non-standardized curing regimes leading to inadequate hydration are a common problem. Through standardized steam curing (temperature 60±5°C, humidity ≥95%, duration 24h), Qinglong Group improved the 28-day strength development efficiency of GRC by 20%. Stress concentration during installation must not be overlooked either. In the Wuhan Han Show Theatre project, we reduced peak stress under wind loads by 30% through optimized hanging point design, effectively delaying strength degradation.
Lack of maintenance accelerates the strength degradation process. Regular inspection and preventive maintenance can identify problems in a timely manner. Qinglong Group establishes digital archives for each project, using drone inspections and sensor monitoring to enable early warning of strength degradation. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One project, this proactive maintenance strategy kept the GRC curtain wall at more than 95% of its design strength after 8 years of use. Through whole-chain quality control, Qinglong GRC products achieve an optimal balance between strength and durability.
