GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) must compete on cost-effectiveness against rival materials such as stone, aluminum panels, and glass in the decorative materials market. Drawing on real-world data, Qinglong Group compares GRC with mainstream materials in terms of price, performance, and application scenarios, helping owners make rational choices.
Compared with natural stone, GRC offers greater price flexibility. Marble and granite cost around 800-2000 RMB/㎡ and are subject to quarrying restrictions; GRC stone-effect panels cost only 500-1200 RMB/㎡ and can be mass-produced. In Qinglong's Dongting Lake Museum project, the GRC stone-effect curtain wall cost 900 RMB/㎡, saving 30% compared with real stone while being 70% lighter, which lowered structural costs. However, the natural veining of natural stone still carries a unique premium.
Compared with metal panels (such as aluminum panels), GRC holds the advantage in artistic shaping. Aluminum panel curtain walls cost around 600-1500 RMB/㎡ and suit modern minimalist styles, but fabricating complex curved surfaces is costly. GRC can achieve relief or hyperbolic surfaces through molds, as in the "Guancao" skin of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, which cost 1100 RMB/㎡, while comparable aluminum panels would require 1600 RMB/㎡. However, aluminum panels offer better wind-pressure resistance in super high-rise buildings.
Compared with glass curtain walls, GRC balances cost and privacy. Glass curtain walls cost around 1200-3000 RMB/㎡, offering good light transmission but high energy consumption; GRC can incorporate light-transmitting designs (such as UHPC light-guide panels) at around 1500 RMB/㎡, while also providing thermal insulation. In Qinglong's UHPC translucent panel project at Shanghai Century Plaza, the cost was 25% lower than a full glass curtain wall.
Compared with low-end materials such as coatings and real-stone paint, GRC requires a higher initial investment (coatings cost only 100-300 RMB/㎡), but it lasts up to 50 years with maintenance costs close to zero. Qinglong's calculations show that GRC's 30-year overall cost is 40% lower than that of real-stone paint. In summary, within the 800-1500 RMB/㎡ range, GRC is an ideal choice for achieving a balance between artistic expression and cost-effectiveness.
