GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) installation spacing is a core parameter affecting the safety and aesthetics of curtain walls, requiring comprehensive consideration of thermal expansion and contraction, structural loads, and design effects. With reference to standards such as the Technical Standard for Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement in Buildings (JGJ/T423-2018), and drawing on practical cases such as the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center, Qinglong Group has summarized general principles and customized strategies for setting GRC spacing.
The joint spacing between GRC panels is typically controlled within 6-12mm, with the specific value depending on panel dimensions and climatic conditions. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project undertaken by Qinglong, the GRC curtain wall panels were relatively large (approximately 3m×1.2m), so we set the joint width at 10mm to accommodate expansion in the hot and humid southern climate. If the spacing is too small (e.g., <5mm), panel edges are prone to cracking from compression; if too large (e.g., >15mm), the durability of the sealant is compromised.
The gap between panels and the main structure also requires precise calculation. Generally, a space of 20-50mm is reserved for installing insulation layers or adjusting tolerances. For example, in the Shanghai Xinghewan GRC project, Qinglong simulated thermal displacement with a 3D model, set the gap at 30mm, and used flexible connectors to absorb deformation. For high-rise buildings, expansion joints must also be provided on each floor at intervals of no more than 12 meters to prevent cumulative deformation.
The spacing of anchor points directly affects the stability of GRC installation. Based on Qinglong's experience, standard panels (area ≤2m²) use 4-point anchoring with anchor spacing of no more than 800mm, while oversized panels (such as the 6m² panels at Hainan Poly Peninsula No. 1) require 6-8 point anchoring with spacing reduced to within 500mm. In the colored openwork panel project at the Nanning Liyuan Hotel, we optimized the anchor layout through finite element analysis to ensure uniform stress distribution across panels under wind loads.
Spacing design must also address aesthetic needs. In the auditorium renovation of the American International School of Guangzhou, Qinglong aligned the GRC panel joints with the building modules to create a facade with a sense of rhythm. We recommend that clients collaborate with suppliers on the design during the proposal stage and use BIM technology to preview spacing effects, avoiding changes during construction. Qinglong's full-chain service ensures seamless spacing control from design to installation, achieving the unity of safety and artistry.
