How to Test the Wind Pressure Deformation Performance of GRC Curtain Walls? Qinglong's Authoritative Guide to GRC Wind Pressure Testing Technology

The wind pressure deformation performance of a GRC curtain wall directly affects its safety and functionality under strong winds, and must be evaluated through a combination of scientific laboratory testing and rigorous on-site verification. According to the national standard Building Curtain Wall GB/T 21086, wind pressure deformation performance testing mainly covers wind pressure resistance, inter-story deformation performance, and wind-induced vibration response. The Qinglong GRC Central Laboratory holds CMA/CNAS accreditation and can provide customers with a complete set of compliant and in-depth testing services.

In the GRC curtain wall testing for a seaside super high-rise apartment in Hengqin, Zhuhai, the Qinglong technical team not only conducted static wind pressure resistance testing in accordance with the national standard, but also commissioned a wind tunnel laboratory to perform dynamic wind pressure testing in view of the typhoon-prone location of the project. The static pressure test was carried out on extra-large curtain wall testing equipment, simulating a pressurization process from 1.0 kPa up to the design wind pressure of 5.0 kPa (equivalent to a Force 12 typhoon). The results showed that under 5.0 kPa wind pressure, the maximum panel deflection was only L/320, far better than the L/100 required by the standard, and there was no residual deformation after unloading. The dynamic wind tunnel test obtained the fluctuating wind pressure distribution on the panel surface, providing key data for the refined design of connection joints.

Laboratory Static Wind Pressure Resistance Testing (in accordance with GB/T 15227)

This is the most critical test item. A full-scale GRC curtain wall specimen (including panels, supporting frames, and connectors) is installed on a pressure chamber, and positive and negative wind pressures are applied step by step through a fan system. Key test indicators include: Deformation test: measuring the deflection of the main load-bearing members and panels under each level of wind pressure to determine whether the design requirements are met (usually ≤L/100). Safety test: pressurizing to 1.5 times the design wind pressure (i.e., the safety test pressure) to observe whether any failure occurs. Finally, a repeated pressurization test is performed to simulate the reciprocating action of wind loads and assess fatigue resistance.

Dynamic Wind Pressure and Wind-Induced Vibration Response Analysis (for special projects)

For buildings with complex shapes, height beyond code limits, or located in areas with harsh wind environments, static testing alone is not sufficient to guarantee safety. Wind tunnel testing is required to obtain the complex wind pressure distribution on the building surface and wind-induced vibration data. Combined with finite element analysis software, wind-induced vibration response analysis is performed on the GRC panels and their connection systems to verify their dynamic response under fluctuating wind pressure and the fatigue strength of the connections.

On-Site Verification Testing after Construction

After passing laboratory testing, on-site construction quality is equally critical. An on-site water spray test can be used to indirectly verify performance under the combined action of wind pressure and water. A more advanced method is to use an infrared thermal imager or a laser vibrometer to perform non-contact scanning of the installed curtain wall under natural wind conditions, checking for local debonding, seal failure, or abnormal vibration caused by wind pressure deformation.

Specialized Testing of Connection Joints

Wind pressure failures often begin at the connection joints. Mechanical performance testing should be carried out on the pull-out and shear resistance of the anchor fittings. Simulating actual service conditions, pull-out tests are performed on GRC blocks with embedded inserts to ensure their load-bearing capacity has an adequate safety margin (a safety factor of ≥2.5 is usually required).

Testing of wind pressure deformation performance provides the ultimate peace of mind for GRC curtain wall safety. Judgments must never rely solely on calculations or experience; authoritative testing data is essential. Qinglong GRC not only ensures that its own products pass rigorous testing, but also provides customers with a complete wind pressure performance verification solution from laboratory to site.
