Acrylate emulsion, i.e., acrylate copolymer emulsion, is an important polymer cement modifier. When incorporated into a GRC system in an appropriate manner, it forms a flexible polymer film network between cement hydration products, aggregates, and fibers, interweaving with the rigid hydration products to produce a significant “composite superposition effect”, thereby comprehensively enhancing multiple properties of GRC, particularly in terms of toughness, bond strength, and durability. Based on in-depth research into its mechanism of action, Qinglong GRC scientifically applies acrylate emulsion in high-end products with special performance requirements.
In an indoor GRC large acoustic decorative panel project at a major transportation hub in Guangzhou, Qinglong GRC innovatively applied acrylate emulsion modification technology. The project required the panels to offer Class A fire resistance while combining excellent sound absorption performance (requiring grooving and perforation on the back) and impact resistance (in high-traffic areas). By incorporating a specific proportion of specialized acrylate emulsion into the inner-layer slurry, three major goals were successfully achieved: 1) Significantly improved the slurry's encapsulation of and bonding to glass fibers, greatly enhancing the integrity of the ultra-thin (10mm) perforated panels; 2) The polymer film enhanced the material's flexibility, increasing its impact resistance by approximately 30% compared with ordinary GRC; 3) The acrylate emulsion effectively sealed microscopic pores and reduced water absorption, making the panels easier to clean and maintain, with improved durability.
The modifying effect of acrylate emulsion is achieved mainly through two pathways: Physical action: polymer particles in the emulsion dehydrate and coalesce during cement hydration, forming continuous, highly elastic films within pores, cracks, and phase interfaces. Chemical action: certain functional groups on the polymer molecular chains may interact with cement hydration products, improving the interfacial structure. Ultimately, an interpenetrating network structure of “polymer film-cement hydration products” is formed, combining the flexibility of organic materials with the rigidity of inorganic ones.
1. Greatly enhanced toughness and impact resistance: The polymer film can absorb and dissipate more energy, allowing the material to undergo greater deformation under stress without shattering, making it especially suitable for locations with high safety requirements.
2. Significantly improved bonding performance and crack resistance: Strengthens the bond between fibers and matrix, and between new and old mortar, reducing the initiation and development of shrinkage microcracks and improving the material's overall integrity.
3. Effectively reduced water absorption and enhanced impermeability: The polymer film blocks and bridges capillary channels, significantly reducing the material's water absorption and enhancing its resistance to water, moisture, and chloride ion penetration.
4. Improved durability and weather resistance: Comprehensive enhancement of resistance to deterioration from freeze-thaw cycles, wet-dry alternation, carbonization, and other forms of attack.
Qinglong GRC strictly follows scientific methodology when applying acrylate emulsion: 1. Selecting specialized grades: Only acrylate emulsions designed specifically for cement modification and with good alkali stability must be used; ordinary architectural coating emulsions are not suitable. 2. Determining the optimal dosage: The dosage must be determined through testing, typically between 5%-15% of the cementitious material mass. Too low a dosage yields little effect, while too high will significantly reduce strength, increase costs, and may compromise fire performance. 3. Adjusting mix proportions and processes: Adding acrylate emulsion introduces air entrainment and setting retardation, requiring corresponding adjustments to the dosage of water reducers and defoamers, and possibly extended curing times. 4. Evaluating overall cost-effectiveness: Acrylate emulsion is a relatively expensive admixture; an optimal balance between performance improvement and cost increase must be found, and it is typically used in “value-added” products with special performance requirements.
Acrylate emulsion opens a new window for improving GRC performance, but it is not a “universal additive”. Qinglong GRC has always adhered to the principle of “apply as needed, verify scientifically”, treating polymer modification technology as a precision tool in its high-end product toolbox, purposefully solving specific engineering challenges and creating value beyond the ordinary for its customers.
