Impact resistance is the most intuitive manifestation of GRC material's "high toughness" characteristic, and it is also an important guarantee for its suitability in densely populated areas, sports venues, and similar locations. The drop-ball impact strength of high-quality GRC can reach 15-25 kJ/m², which is 5-8 times that of ordinary concrete. Through a unique fiber reinforcement system design, Qinglong GRC products exhibit excellent energy absorption capacity and safety when subjected to accidental impacts.
In the indoor ceiling project of Terminal 2 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, the impact resistance of Qinglong GRC panels underwent rigorous testing. A 1 kg steel ball was dropped freely from a height of 2 meters onto the panel surface; no cracks appeared on the back of the panel, with only a slight indentation at the impact point. This outstanding performance is attributed to the three-dimensionally randomly distributed glass fiber network within the material. When impact loads act on the panel, the fibers absorb a large amount of energy through two mechanisms—"pull-out" and "fracture"—effectively preventing rapid crack propagation. Testing showed that the GRC panels used in this project have an impact strength of 18 kJ/m², ensuring safe use in densely populated public transportation hubs.
GRC's impact resistance stems from its multi-level energy dissipation mechanisms. First, the cement matrix develops micro-cracks under impact, consuming part of the energy; then, glass fibers spanning the cracks absorb more energy through interfacial bonding friction and their own deformation; finally, some fibers are pulled out or ruptured, completing the final energy dissipation. Qinglong GRC maximizes energy absorption efficiency by optimizing the fiber-matrix interfacial bond strength.
Unlike static loading, GRC exhibits a strain-rate strengthening effect under impact loads, with dynamic strength up to 20%-30% higher than its static strength. Its failure mode is typical "ductile failure": numerous fine cracks appear first and load-bearing capacity declines slowly, without the sudden collapse characteristic of brittle materials, providing valuable time for warning and evacuation in emergencies.
The type, length, content, and distribution uniformity of the fibers are key. Qinglong uses alkali-resistant glass fibers 12-25 mm in length, with the volume content controlled at 4%-5%, and ensures their uniform three-dimensional distribution through an improved spraying process. In addition, the toughness of the matrix and the interfacial bond strength between fibers and matrix also directly affect the final performance.
In areas with dense human activity, even if a component fails due to extreme impact, GRC does not produce sharp, high-velocity fragments, greatly reducing the risk of secondary injury. Post-impact residual load-bearing capacity tests show that its remaining capacity can still reach more than 60% of the initial value, providing a certain degree of "damage tolerance."
GRC's excellent impact resistance has been verified through standard testing and practical applications. In locations requiring high safety, choosing GRC is a wise decision. Qinglong GRC is committed to safeguarding the safety of public spaces through material innovation.
