GRC's impact resistance is an important manifestation of its toughness. According to test data, high-quality GRC can achieve a ball-drop impact strength of 15-25kJ/m², which is 5-8 times that of ordinary concrete. This excellent impact resistance makes GRC particularly suitable for areas with dense foot traffic and locations where accidental collisions may occur.
In the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport Terminal 2 project, Qinglong GRC decorative panels underwent rigorous impact resistance testing: a 1kg steel ball was dropped freely from a height of 2 meters onto the panel surface, and no cracks appeared on the back of the panels. This impact resistance benefits from the three-dimensional randomly distributed glass fiber network in the material. When subjected to impact loads, the fibers effectively prevent crack propagation and absorb impact energy. The optimized mix ratio used in the project (fiber volume content of 4%-5%) and the spray-up molding process ensure uniform fiber distribution in the matrix, maximizing the reinforcing effect. Inspection of specimens after impact showed crack widths controlled within 0.1mm, exhibiting good ductile failure characteristics.
GRC absorbs impact energy through multiple mechanisms, including fiber pull-out, fiber fracture, and matrix cracking. High-quality products can achieve impact energy absorption values more than 10 times that of ordinary concrete, exhibiting excellent toughness. Under impact loads, the material can dissipate a large amount of energy through micro-crack development, avoiding brittle failure.
Under impact loads, GRC exhibits strain rate sensitivity, with dynamic strength 20%-30% higher than static strength. This characteristic provides a better safety reserve in the event of accidental impact. Drop hammer impact tests show that the ultimate deflection can reach 1/50 of the span, far exceeding ordinary cement products.
Under impact loads, GRC fails in a ductile manner: micro-cracks appear first, followed by slow crack propagation, without sudden brittle fracture. This failure mode leaves a time window for repair and maintenance, ensuring safety in use. When failure occurs, cracks are evenly distributed, with no risk of flying debris.
In areas with dense personnel activity, even if GRC components fail, they will not produce sharp fragments, ensuring safety in use. This characteristic makes them particularly suitable for sensitive locations such as schools and hospitals. Load-bearing capacity tests after impact tests show that the residual load-bearing capacity can still reach more than 60% of the initial value.
GRC's excellent impact resistance has been verified through extensive experiments. Correct product selection and structural design can fully leverage its safety performance advantages. It is recommended to carry out specialized impact resistance design for critical locations to ensure absolute safety.
