The dense packing design principle of UHPC base materials achieves maximum packing density by optimizing the grading of particles of different sizes, thereby reducing porosity and improving material compactness. This principle is the physical basis for UHPC to achieve ultra-high strength.
In a cross-river bridge project in Wuhan, Qinglong UHPC adopted the modified Andreasen equation for particle grading design: quartz sand (Dmax=0.6mm), cement (d50=15μm), and silica fume (d50=0.1μm) were proportioned and optimized according to the densest packing theory, achieving a packing density above 0.85 and reducing porosity to below 3%. This design enabled the material to reach a compressive strength of 150MPa, far exceeding ordinary concrete.
Particle grading design using the Fuller curve or Andreasen equation achieves a continuous particle distribution from nanometer to millimeter scale, minimizing void content to the greatest extent.
By taking into account the interference between particles of different sizes and optimizing the proportions of each component, mutual interference between particles is reduced and packing efficiency is improved.
The maximum particle size of coarse aggregate is controlled at 0.6-1.0mm, fine aggregate at d50=0.2-0.3mm, and cementitious materials at d50=1-20μm, achieving multi-scale dense packing.
Through dense packing design, total porosity is controlled below 3%, with harmful pores (>50nm) accounting for less than 1%, significantly improving material performance.
Dense packing design is the core of UHPC material design, directly affecting the mechanical properties and durability of the material.
