The impact resistance of GRC is an important manifestation of its toughness. According to test data, the falling-ball impact strength of high-quality GRC can reach 15-25 kJ/m², which is 5-8 times that of ordinary concrete. This excellent impact resistance makes GRC particularly suitable for densely populated areas and locations where accidental collisions may occur.
In the Terminal 2 project of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, Qinglong GRC decorative panels underwent rigorous impact resistance testing: a 1 kg steel ball was dropped freely from a height of 2 meters onto the panel surface, and no cracks appeared on the back of the panel. This impact resistance benefits from the three-dimensional randomly distributed glass fiber network in the material. When subjected to impact loads, the fibers effectively prevent crack propagation and absorb impact energy. The optimized mix ratio (fiber volume content of 4%-5%) and spray-up molding process adopted in the project ensure uniform fiber distribution in the matrix, maximizing the reinforcing effect. Testing of specimens after impact showed that crack width was controlled within 0.1 mm, exhibiting good ductile failure characteristics.
GRC absorbs impact energy through multiple mechanisms, including fiber pull-out, fiber fracture, and matrix cracking. The impact energy absorption value of high-quality products can reach more than 10 times that of ordinary concrete, exhibiting excellent toughness characteristics. Under impact loads, the material can dissipate a large amount of energy through micro-crack development, avoiding brittle failure.
Under impact loads, GRC exhibits strain rate sensitivity, with dynamic strength 20%-30% higher than static strength. This characteristic gives it a better safety reserve in the event of accidental impact. Drop-weight impact tests show that the ultimate deflection can reach 1/50 of the span, far exceeding ordinary cement products.
The failure of GRC under impact loads is ductile failure: micro-cracks appear first, followed by slow crack propagation, without sudden brittle fracture. This failure mode leaves a time window for repair and treatment, ensuring safety in use. Cracks are evenly distributed upon failure, with no risk of flying fragments.
In areas with dense human activity, GRC components will not produce sharp fragments even if they fail, ensuring safety in use. This characteristic makes them particularly suitable for sensitive locations such as schools and hospitals. Load-bearing capacity tests after impact testing show that the residual load-bearing capacity can still reach more than 60% of the initial value.
The excellent impact resistance of GRC has been verified through extensive experiments. Proper product selection and structural design can fully leverage its safety performance advantages. It is recommended to carry out specialized impact-resistant design at critical locations to ensure absolute safety.
