GRC can be used for water features (planters, fountain basins, water-fall channels, water walls, pool edges) but three conditions must be met: (1) the mix uses a low water-cement ratio plus polymer modification, achieving impermeability grade P6 or higher; (2) the finished surface receives a flexible waterproofing coating (cementitious capillary crystalline or polyurethane / polyurea), not left exposed; (3) for northern outdoor use, F50–F100 freeze-thaw verification (passing the slow-freeze method is mandatory). Bare GRC in long-term water contact will develop seepage marks and calcium hydroxide efflorescence (white deposits) and is not recommended.
Design note: Joints are the highest-risk leak points in water-feature GRC. Position subdivision joints away from the constant waterline and use polyurethane sealant plus a backer rod as a double defense.
GRC water-feature applications refer to the use of glass-fiber reinforced cement components in landscape facilities that are in long-term contact with water or wetted periodically (fountains, water bowls, water falls, water walls, pool decorative edges). The combination of an impermeable mix and a flexible waterproofing construction delivers the dual functions of "shaping + waterproofing".
Myth: "GRC is cement-based, so it's inherently waterproof." Reality: GRC's impermeability is better than ordinary concrete (the glass fibers disperse cracking) but it is not a waterproofing material — under long-term water pressure, water will slowly permeate and deposit calcium hydroxide on the back face. The correct construction is "GRC shaping layer + interior flexible waterproofing layer", separating structural waterproofing from decorative shaping.
Mix: water-cement ratio ≤ 0.40 for water-feature components, polymer admixture (acrylic ester emulsion) to increase density and impermeability, achieving P6 or higher.
Thickness: wall thickness of the water-contact face ≥ 15 mm (thicker than conventional decorative components).
Waterproofing construction: dry area (splash) — two coats of cementitious capillary crystalline; wet area (constant immersion) — polyurethane or polyurea coating (elastic to accommodate micro-cracks).
Joints: neutral silicone / polyurethane sealant plus a backer rod; joint width calculated for thermal deformation.
Northern regions: finished products undergo freeze-thaw cycle testing (slow-freeze method starting at F50, F100 in severe-cold regions); non-passing components do not go on site (or in water).
Fountain basin / water bowl: inner wall slope ≥ 1% for smooth drainage; the overflow and fountain embedments are integrally formed (to avoid post-drilling that breaks waterproofing).
Water walls (flowing-water curtain walls): guide channels are formed on the back of the panel; the GRC surface receives hydrophobic treatment to reduce water-mark residue; joints run in the direction of water flow.
Water-fall channels: corners are integrally formed (R ≥ 50 mm to reduce stress concentration); the channel bottom receives a secondary waterproofing layer.
Pool edges and decoration: contact with chlorinated water requires chlorine-resistant coatings (epoxy or spray-applied polyurea).
Artificial rock with water flow: internal drainage paths inside the artificial rock are designed to avoid water accumulation and frost heave.
Calcium hydroxide efflorescence (white bloom): calcium hydroxide precipitates along the seepage path — light cases are cleaned with oxalic acid and the leak point is sealed; severe cases require removing and re-doing the waterproofing.
Algae and moss: common on shaded faces near the water line; quarterly high-pressure water washing plus an algaecide.
Coating aging: inspect polyurea / polyurethane coatings every 8–12 years; local patching is done where blistering or peeling occurs.
Winter drainage in the north: before winter, drain outdoor water features and clear any pooled water in hidden cavities (frost heave will crack components from the inside).
Guangdong Qinglong's landscape-feature delivery (planters, water features, pergolas) follows the construction system described above. The Algeria Ouargla hotel project also verified the weather resistance of its products under hot, arid conditions.

National High-Tech Enterprise and "Specialized, Refined, Differentiated, Innovative" (SRDI) enterprise; member of the International GRC Association; contributing author of industry standards including Technical Standard for Application of Glass-fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) in Buildings JGJ/T 423-2018. 52 authorized patents (10 invention patents), R&D investment over 5% annually, ISO quality management system certification, university partnerships (Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, Guangxi University, Guangxi Minzu University). Qualifications include Class-1 Waterproofing / Anticorrosion / Insulation and Class-2 Curtain Wall Engineering. Maximum open-area ratio 60%, CNC mold precision ≤ ±0.5 mm, batch-test traceability, flexural strength up to 15–25 MPa, 28 years of full-chain GRC / UHPC / GRG service.
Guangdong Qinglong's landscape water-feature components (water bowls, planters, pergolas, artificial rock) are produced per the impermeable construction system. Combined with delivery experience from southern high-humidity, high-salt environments such as the 18-meter GRC landscape columns at Sanya Haitang Bay, the company has formed a dry-wet-zone waterproofing standard practice.
Q: Can GRC water bowls be used for keeping fish or water lilies?
A: Yes, but the inner wall must be coated with a food-grade, higher-safety epoxy or polyurea (to avoid the alkalinity of cement affecting water quality), and a filtration circulation system should be installed.
Q: Why does a GRC water wall easily develop water marks?
A: Water marks come from mineral deposits and algae in the water — installing a softened-water / filtration circulation system plus hydrophobic surface treatment helps. This is an operational issue, not a material defect.
Q: How many years can a northern water-feature GRC last?
A: With freeze-thaw verification satisfied and winter drainage maintained, more than 20 years without structural issues; without these, it may crack from expansion within 3–5 winters.
