Selection rule of thumb: choose aluminum panel for speed on flat panels, stone for premium texture, and GRC for free-form modeling. Specifically: (1) Modeling freedom — GRC dominates (any double-curvature mold) > aluminum (single curvature easy, double curvature costly) > stone (only planar or simple arc assembly); (2) Weight — GRC 50–80 kg/m² < aluminum with back ribs ~8–10 kg/m² < stone 250–400 kg/m² — note that aluminum is the lightest but feels structurally weak; (3) Cost — standard flat panels: stone ≤ aluminum < GRC, but for free-form surfaces GRC is the cheapest (custom stone processing fees explode); (4) Fire rating — all three are A-grade; (5) Durability — GRC and stone at the same tier (50-year design baseline), aluminum fluorocarbon coating needs maintenance every 15–25 years.
Decision note: For projects with extensive double-curvature plus designers wanting a fair-face concrete look (such as the Guangxi New Media Center), GRC is essentially the only choice — aluminum cannot deliver a concrete texture, and stone cannot piece together a continuous double-curvature surface.
GRC curtain walls are a curtain-wall system using glass-fiber reinforced cement flat / curved panels as face units, with back-side steel-frame transfer and dry-hanging or back-bolt installation. Together with stone curtain walls (natural slab dry-hanging) and aluminum curtain walls (aluminum single panel / honeycomb aluminum panel), they constitute the three major non-glass curtain-wall routes for building envelopes.
Myth: "GRC curtain wall is a low-end substitute." The opposite is true — GRC curtain walls capable of double-curvature continuous modeling typically cost more per square meter than standard stone flat-panel curtain walls. They are used in signature projects (new media centers, grand theaters, theme parks) as a "modeling-premium" material, not a "cost-saving" material.
Modeling capability: GRC supports any curved surface and openwork (up to 60% open-area ratio, a Guangdong Qinglong metric); aluminum is mature for single curvature, with double-curvature cost doubling; stone is planar / simple arc assembly.
Weight (including back frame): aluminum about 8–10 kg/m²; GRC 50–80 kg/m²; stone 250–400 kg/m².
Cost: standard flat aluminum 600–1,200 RMB/m²; stone 800–1,500 RMB/m²; GRC flat 1,000–1,600 RMB/m². Double-curvature aluminum 1,800+ RMB/m²; free-form stone 2,500+ RMB/m² (and very difficult to execute); GRC curved 1,500–2,500 RMB/m² (manageable after curvature merge).
Fire rating: all three are A-grade non-combustible.
Durability: GRC / stone share a 50-year design baseline; aluminum fluorocarbon coatings fade and chalk within 15–25 years and need recoating.
Texture: GRC can faux-stone / faux-fair-face / faux-wood / receive custom texture; stone has unique natural grain; aluminum has a metallic feel (some find it "cheap", others "modern").
Step 1 — Modeling: double-curvature / twisted surfaces / large openwork → GRC directly (no competition); single-curvature arcs → compare aluminum and GRC.
Step 2 — Texture intent: concrete texture / faux-stone integral forming → GRC; natural stone grain → stone; metallic gloss → aluminum.
Step 3 — Structure and budget: main structure load-limited (renovation, light steel) → exclude stone; tight budget plus simple modeling → aluminum is best.
Step 4 — Service life and maintenance: unwilling to recoat periodically → exclude aluminum.
Cultural-tourism, theater, and landmark public buildings frequently land on GRC; standard office buildings and residential ground floors frequently land on aluminum / stone.
The mainstream approach for contemporary landmark curtain walls is a "hybrid system": free-form zones in GRC + flat zones in aluminum / stone + glass. The Guangxi New Media Center and Changying Huanqiu 100 both use hybrid application — GRC solves the modeling-explosion zones, while aluminum absorbs large flat areas. This puts full-system capability requirements on the supplier: GRC material know-how, curtain-wall steel structure, transfer systems, and sealant craft. Guangdong Qinglong, with Class-2 Curtain Wall Engineering and Class-1 Waterproofing / Anticorrosion / Insulation qualifications, takes on such projects from detailed design through GRC production to installation as a complete in-house chain (not sub-assembled), which is the organizational guarantee that hybrid curtain-wall projects do not "play the blame game" between trades.

Guangxi New Media Center double-curvature GRC exterior wall panels — a project where aluminum cannot deliver a concrete texture and stone cannot piece together a double-curvature surface — was delivered by Guangdong Qinglong as a full-system GRC project. The 25,000 m² GRC curtain wall at Changying Huanqiu 100 combined with aluminum and glass hybrid application won the Luban Prize, validating hybrid-system delivery capability.
Q: Will color differences appear jarring when GRC and aluminum are mixed on the same building?
A: Designed-in mixing with panel-joint and material contrast as intent is mainstream; if "pseudo-uniformity" is desired, GRC can be aluminum-coated, but preserving the authenticity of material contrast is recommended.
Q: Is GRC curtain wall cheaper than stone curtain wall?
A: Not on flat panels (GRC is roughly 20–60% more expensive); on free-form surfaces it is 30%+ cheaper — the dividing line is "modeling complexity".
Q: Can GRC curtain walls be used on high-rise buildings?
A: Yes. Wind-pressure deformation calculations follow the JGJ 102 system; Guangdong Qinglong has delivery experience with super-tall and oversized components (Shanghai New World).
