The Science Behind the 28-Day GRC Curing Cycle: Hydration, Strength Growth, and the Cost of Rushing

The 28-day GRC curing cycle is grounded in cement hydration kinetics: the first 7 days is rapid strength growth (need full water availability to drive the gel-forming reaction); 14–28 days is strength stabilization (internal structure densifies, cracking resistance and durability lift significantly). Cutting the cycle short leads to surface cracking and strength shortfall. The article walks through phased curing — production, on-site, and special-environment regimes — per JGJ/T423-2018, and the costs of schedule pressure when the cycle is rushed.

I. Why 28 Days Is the Minimum

Per the Glass-fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) Building Application Technical Standard (JGJ/T423-2018) and 20+ years of engineering validation, GRC components require a basic curing period of no less than 28 days. The first 7 days is rapid strength growth, where water must be fully available to drive the gel-forming reaction; 14–28 days is strength stabilization, in which the internal structure of the component progressively densifies, lifting cracking resistance and durability materially. When curing time is insufficient, the component tends to surface-crack and lose strength — directly shortening the project life. One commercial complex, by cutting its cycle to 15 days, picked up hairline cracks on the façade within half a year, and the post-repair bill ran 30% above a properly-cured reference.

II. Phased Curing Standards: From Production to Installation

1. Production-phase curing (Days 1–7): The strength foundation

Right after demoulding, GRC components must enter a temperature- and humidity-controlled curing chamber. A combination of steam curing and mist spraying keeps ambient temperature at 20–25 °C and relative humidity ≥90%, preventing early-stage moisture loss and cracking. During this stage, temperature and humidity data should be logged every 2 hours, ensuring the curing curve follows the factory's internal standard — which, at mature suppliers, sits roughly 15% tighter on humidity control than industry average, materially reducing shrinkage.

2. Post-installation curing (Days 8–28): Adapting to site conditions

After on-site installation, a "secondary curing" pass is required. Tailor the regime by climate: hot regions — 3 spray passes per day, each keeping the surface wet for 30 minutes; cold regions — insulating blankets and full anti-freeze discipline; rainy regions — drainage discipline to prevent prolonged soaking. Mature project teams keep a dedicated curing log, recording daily activities to satisfy the later-stage curing requirements of standards covering UHPC non-load-bearing components.

3. Special-environment curing: Facing extreme conditions

For coastal high-salt-spray regions or cold regions, mature suppliers recommend extending the cycle to 42 days, with silane impregnation in the later stage to boost impermeability and frost resistance. On one Malaysian coastal project, this treatment pushed GRC salt-spray resistance past 5,000 hours — far above the conventional industry standard.

III. The Long-Term Value of Disciplined Curing: From Cost Control to Brand Assurance

Disciplined GRC curing does more than extend component life (mature supplier data shows science-based curing pushes GRC service life past 50 years) — it lowers full-lifecycle cost. On one landmark project, the 28-day standardized cycle cut 10-year repair spend by 65% versus a project without disciplined curing. As a national high-tech enterprise and participant in GRC industry standards, mature suppliers integrate the curing step into the full-chain quality system — considering curing feasibility from the deepening-design stage onward, delivering an integrated "design – production – installation – curing" solution.

Notes

Summary: the 28-day GRC curing cycle is the scientific crystallization of material behaviour and engineering practice. Ignoring curing leaves the best design and material unable to deliver its value. When selecting a GRC supplier, look past the product itself — examine the supplier's curing technology and service capability. Only by carrying disciplined curing end-to-end does architectural beauty stand the test of time.

The Science Behind the 28-Day GRC Curing Cycle: Hydration, Strength Growth, and the Cost of Rushing
GRC standard curing period is 28 days: it covers the critical period of strength gain during cement hydration (70% at 7 days, 95%+ at 28 days). Steam curing can accelerate this but requires matching process conditions. This article explains the science of curing and the risks of rushing the schedule.
