In curtain wall material selection, GRC, aluminium panels, and terracotta panels are the three most common contenders. Each has unambiguous advantages and disadvantages, and the right choice depends on project priorities. Guangdong Qinglong Construction gives a four-dimensional cross-evaluation and an evidence-based conclusion on which material best serves which scenario.
| Dimension | GRC | Aluminium Panels | Terracotta Panels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire rating | A1 non-combustible | A1 (the metal), but the composite panel core (if used) is often B-grade — careful selection needed | A1 non-combustible |
| Formability (curved surfaces) | Any double-curved surface, relief sculpture | Limited bending radius; complex curves require moulded composite panels | Limited to flat panels or shallow concave/convex arcs |
| Weight per m² (typical) | 45–55 kg | 5–10 kg (single-layer aluminium); 15–25 kg (composite) | 30–50 kg |
| Design life | 50+ years | 25–40 years (coating degrades); anodised lasts longer | 50+ years |
| Surface finish flexibility | Cement texture, paint, faux stone, imitation wood, custom relief | PVDF coating, anodising, custom colour; metallic look | Natural clay tone, limited colour options |
| Impact resistance | Moderate — surface can chip on heavy impact | High — ductile metal absorbs impact | Brittle — breaks on sharp impact |
| Maintenance cycle | Cleaning once or twice yearly; repaint every 10–15 years | Annual cleaning; recoat every 15–25 years | Self-cleaning in rain; virtually no maintenance |
| Cost (per m² installed, façade) | RMB 1,000–2,500 | RMB 800–1,800 | RMB 1,200–2,200 |
| Installation speed | Moderate — requires moulding + dry-hang | Fast — modular dry-hang | Moderate — wet or dry-hang depending on detail |
Strengths: A1 fire rating, complete formability, durable cement texture, strong custom colour and surface treatment, lifelike imitation stone / wood / concrete.
Weaknesses: heavier than aluminium, surface is brittle to point impact, longer fabrication cycle (moulds needed).
Strengths: extremely lightweight, fast installation, strong modern architectural expression, good ductility for impact resistance.
Weaknesses: the core of common composite panels (e.g., polyethylene-filled ACP) is combustible and banned on high-rises in many jurisdictions; pure aluminium is expensive; the formability of cold-bent single sheets is limited, and complex curves require composite panels that re-introduce the fire risk.
Strengths: pure natural material, A1 fire rating, excellent weather resistance, very low maintenance.
Weaknesses: limited shape (flat or shallow arc), narrow colour range (natural clay tones), brittle under impact, colour drift possible between batches.
The choice between GRC, aluminium, and terracotta is not a linear "good → bad" scale. It is a multi-constraint trade-off: GRC wins on formability and fire rating; aluminium wins on lightness and speed; terracotta wins on natural texture and zero-maintenance longevity. Most projects benefit from a hybrid approach rather than committing to one material across the entire envelope. The right answer depends on which dimension matters most for each face of the building.
